Well, we've adopted (rescued...) a new flock member. Meet Reno!

He (probably male - we're not sure) is 18 years old, and was owned by an elderly lady since he was a wee youngster. Unfortunately (as you can see), he's a feather chewer. According to the lady who owned him, he's been doing this for 10 years or so. He doesn't seem to pull them out, but once they grow long enough to resemble actual feathers, he chews them off. He has pretty much no tail, and only the longest, outer wing feathers (so flight is out of the question).

The lady has severe health problems, and bird dander is now life-threatening to her, so she simply couldn't live in the same house with him any more.

Interestingly, she said she's never stroked or cuddled him, and that he's not that kind of bird. As soon as we got him home, he climbed onto my wife, and immediately put his beak down to get his neck rubbed. Naturally, my wife obliged, and he loved it!

He's also only been to the vet once in 18 years, so he'll be going there very shortly. Aside from everything else, his nails have never been trimmed, and they are VERY sharp. I suppose it wasn't a problem for the lady, as she never allowed Reno to sit on her shoulder but, at least for us, he LOVES to ride shoulders, and is extremely relaxed & gentle when doing so.

He is, thankfully, happy with quality food, particularly fresh fruits & vegetables, along with his pellet food, so we won't have to wean him onto the good stuff.

Anyway, my wife is over the moon! Reno is an inveterate talker, with quite the repertoire. Unfortunately, he's apparently been exposed to a smoke detector with a weak battery, and he mimics that sound precisely...and LOUD, LOL.

So, we'll be getting him to the vet for a general checkup & nail trim, and looking into whether we can help him let his feathers grow back, but I suppose a 10-year habit may be difficult to break. None of our other birds have ever been pickers/chewers...

Here's his first picture, with sitting on my wife's shoulder (aha! He IS a shoulder bird!)

What a sweet heart! It's amazing how a bird's true personality blooms with the right love and care. I'm very glad that Reno found you! I hope that the first vet visit goes well and that (fingers crossed) Reno can grow beautiful feathers again. Though he's certainly handsome enough as is :)

Reno sure is lucky to have such loving caring guardians after being neglected for so long.
All he wanted was love and is now getting in abundance.
Reno is beautiful, sure in time he will grow back his feathers

Enjoy all those precious moments, only a bird can give

Congratulations to you and a warm welcome to beautiful Reno. Thank you for sharing his homecoming story. He looks very comfortable in his new home. Please let us know how the vet visit goes.

Reno is beautiful! Congrats on the new addition to you family! I hope the vet visit goes well, it seems he has already made himself at home with you and your wife:)

Just a quick update on Reno. His first vet visit, due to them being very busy, ended up being nothing more than a claw trimming (in his case, talons!). He has a full checkup visit planned in another week, but at first blush, the vet seemed very pleased with Reno's appetite & eating habits, stool appearance, etc.

We were concerned that, not having left his previous house in 10 years, the vet visit would be very stressful for him. As it turns out, he was an absolute treasure for the staff, performing & chattering happily for them! He appears to be a very sociable bird, and will stick his foot out to step up immediately on the approach of anyone! He will also happily take a dish of food from anyone who offers it (and he eats VERY heartily!). He only allows my wife (who seems to be his primary "bond") to preen his neck so far, but I'm sure this will improve in time. We've only had him a few days, after all! When I try, he holds my finger in his beak - firmly, but not enough to hurt - as if to say "soon, but not yet!"

What is really funny is that his clarity of speech is rubbing off on Sammy the 'Zon, who speaks a lot but is often "mush-mouthed". Not only has Sammy's elocution dramatically improved, but his vocabulary has increased as well...

I suspect that Reno is going to be a very good fit, indeed!
