Hi everyone, I'm Syxx. I stumbled upon this site while trying to learn as much about conures as humanly possible before I pick up my little guy tomorrow. I've already read through about 10 pages of posts on the conure section and have made some modifications to the setup.
I have a cage that's about 24 x 24 x 36, and he'll be spending a lot of out time.
We've decided to name him Shooter. We don't know if he's a boy or a girl, but I like the calling him "him", so he's an honorary boy lol. He's 6 weeks old and completely weaned.
How we decided to get him is a bit odd. I'm a former canary owner and always felt that they were better than the "noisy ones", and my hubby used to help raise and wean the larger parrots. We've been debating about a bird for over 4 years now. I didn't really want a conure because every one I've seen (including my friends') have been biters, and I'm a wimp.
Recently we were at a pet store and it changed my opinion. I found a lovable little pinapple there, and he was a darling. We couldn't afford him ($700!) but we decided to start looking for a conure that I liked.
We looked at some, but either I didn't like their attitudes, or I didn't like the setup. Eventually we found a breeder that we liked. We came to see the babies, and I was interested in the 2 cinnamons, but they were too wrangy for me. There was a calm little green cheek hanging out near the door, so I asked to see him. He stayed on my finger and hung out with me the whole time. Thus, we found Shooter.
We went out today and bought a cockatiel cage kit, since the bars are smaller and I don't want him getting his head caught. We bought all of the extra things you need for a conure instead of a 'tiel (different food, better toys, etc) and set everything up today, so the cats can have a good sniff. We're hanging the cage where they can't get it, and when he's out, the cats will locked up in the bedroom (where they normally spend all of their time anyway lol). We also have a German Shepherd, and she has accpeted any animal we have ever brought in the house, so we're not worried about her.
When we pick him up tomorrow I'm going to bring the cat carrier with a towel in it to bring him home.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm a worry wart new owner, and I'm hoping that by writing everything out, I can get some reassurances that I'm setting up okay, and see if anyone has any other tips I can get
Thank everyone for reading
