Hi, I’m a new owner of an Amazon. I was given an Amazon that was found by a friend after seeing it attacked by dogs and cats in his front yard. When I brought him or her home it was visibly frightened and would go crazy when we would get close to it while it was in its cage. It’s been a few days now and he is now calm and is okay with me being next to the cage or just doing errands around him no problem. If I make any sudden movements close to him I can see he does not like that but there’s progress. I am trying to find out if this bird was a wild bird or maybe was someone’s pet once, anyone have any opinions?

Hi there! Does the bird have a leg band?

It’s difficult to know. The bird could be taken to a vet to see if it has a microchip.

Where are you located? Generally? In the USA, likely its someones pet. Wild parrot sales ceased decades ago. WOrldwide, not so much. Like illegal wild parrot trade flourishes in some places.

Red Lored amazons the bird species you have there have been breeding in the wild’s of Los Angeles.
They don’t make up the majority of the wild parrots in the area but they exist.
The only way I can answer that question is he/she may be from a wild flock local to the area.
If he talks or whistles in ways humans do it’s more likely an escape pet.
Do take him for a full check up at an avian vet.

I would think that if the bird was truly wild it wouldn't be as calm when you're close to his cage. He's a very pretty Amazon.
I’m hoping for an update on him.
He looks achingly like my Pacho that I miss so much.
What kind of sounds does he make?
My Pacho never did talk but would wolf whistle and whistle “pretty bird” and laugh whistle.

Sorry for the delayed update. After a few weeks of working with the bird using target training have made huge progress. Just in the last 2 days he has started to come up on my arm as I am trying to teach it step up. Soon will be taking him to a vet now that he is no longer afraid of his environment.
The noises he makes is growls when he has an attitude or small chirps and honking noises. So sorry to hear about you and your bird Pacho.

Please, please take this bird to a vet and check for a microchip, and check in parrot forums about a lost bird (don’t give any details to folks, let them tell you what the bird’s name is for example to see if it responds). Your friend did a great thing saving them, but they may be someone’s lost pet and it hurts my heart, that they are missing each other. Please x

Are you asking if he is wild as he might have flown here from Brazil or if he was someone else’s pet who happened to have been a wild caught bird? As others have said, it is no longer legal to import wild caught parrots. Might still be people doing it, but not like they used to. If this bird is completely wild, he would be fearful and want nothing to do with you. But, that could also be the case if he was abused or had been through a trauma, which he has. You can’t really tell their origin, wild caught or domestic bred, from personality alone. Amazons are kind of cranky one person birds anyway, and they can take a while to warm up to you. I happen to have a wild caught Amazon, I know because he had a leg band with some numbers on it and I was able to do an internet search and see he was imported into Miami in the late 1980s. He was purchased by his first owner from a pet store. He would not be what you consider a sweet, cuddly bird…though he is slightly sweet and cuddly with me, most of the time. He just hates and wants to murder everyone else on the planet. You could say he is like this because of what happened to him as a chick, but I have known plenty of “mean” domestic bred parrots, so I don’t know.

I would definitely take him to a vet, he needs a wellness check, no matter what. Be prepared to spend some money. And yes, as everyone said, he should be scanned for a chip. People lose birds all the time, could be someone is desperately looking for him. If not and you decide to keep him, just give him time. Don’t expect miracles overnight. He has been through a lot, poor thing.

As an update, took the bird to the vet. No chip, vet believed it to be a wild young bird about 1-3 years in age. Just got the blood work back. The dr said this little guy is remarkably healthy, healthy weight, nothing concerning on bloodwork, small protein deficiency from a diet primarily of fruits. Awaiting results from dna test for gender now as well.
