Hi everyone, Iam from Greece Europe. I have an african grey parrot (7 months old), and a wild pair for breeding. I dont know much about birds but I am learning. My husband loves parrots and he bought one. But now I am the one that is in love with parrots. Thats why I bought the wild pair. They are very intelligent and they suprise me every day. Iam sorry about my english if I make mistakes

Welcome to the forum. My first thought is if you do not know much about birds why are you breeding? It takes much experience and know how to do this. Wild caught greys have gone through trauma in the process of being caught by poachers.
There is much to learn about nutritional needs of the pair breeding, safety, cycles and most especially the raising and hand feeding of the babies. If I could talk you out of breeding I sure would.

Hello & welcome to the forum.

My, African Greys for a beginner. You are taking on a very big responsibility there. I have to agree with Spiritbird breeding Parrots is no easy task. You have to do a lot of research before you even think about it. I am not sure how well a wild pair would settle in to captivity & breed successfully. If in fact they are a bonded pair.

Hand-rearing the babies has its moments as well. There is so very many problems that can arise. If you haven't a clue how to handle a health problem or are unable to identify a sick baby bird you run the risk of losing that baby. I have seen & had to help to many inexperienced breeders & then they try to hand rear the chicks & get into trouble because they have done the wrong thing. I just feel so sorry for those babies that really should have been healthy little chicks.

I would appeal to you to think very serious about breeding until at least you have gained a lot of knowledge about the species you intend to breed. When i started out i bred Cockatiels & let me tell you i had a couple of upsets. But i didn't go into it with my eyes closed either. I bought books, joined Bird Clubs & talked to as many breeders as i could, so i was ready in theory all that was left was practice, practice & practice some more. 20 years later i still don't know everything & am still learning.

I really hope you reconsider & leave the breeding to the experts. In the mean time enjoy the little 7 month old Grey you already have. It sounds like a little sweetie.

Cheers,

C

The birds are with rings from a breeder in captivity all their lives. I said wild because they are not tamed for pets. I read a lot, I ask a lot, thats why Iam in your forum. And dont tell me that everyone who has a pair knows much about breeding. Its experience and reading.
Everyone has lost babies, and I have raised two actually feeding them formula food and all the weaning period. one eclectus and one african grey. I lost my eclectus not from my mistake. He was very tamed and my son gave him something that he souldnt give him to eat. I took him to my vet then to an exrert vet in parrots, nothing,he died. Now I have learn to be more carefull. I dont want to do that for money, its like a hobby. I loved the hole procedure of raising young ones. I have the pair healthy ,strong, calm with all the food and the vitamines they need. The space and the heat they need. They are much more better than the breeder, I am sure of that!

Sorry if i offended you, that was not my intention. You did say in your intro you didn't know much about birds, now i feel a little misled with your second post. I didn't realize you were experienced in raising 2 babies.

I think that anyone with 20 years experience has gained a lot of knowledge about breeding & the care of the chicks & would be of great help to someone just starting out.

I wish you luck in your future venture & hope all goes to plan for you.

its ok. I know that you and many people in the forum has experience thats why I join the forum to seek answers to problems that I will have.
