Parrots
Senegal Parrot
:green:Hello! I am a new member here, also a new parrot ownerI I have a four month old senegal parrot. He is very lovable and likes to be with you, wherever you are. He seems to fit in right away, wasn't too scared to be with his new owner. My questions are, what should I look for if he gets sick? What kind of behaviors to look for. He is happy and he loves to eat. He is very inquisitive, and he gets mad if he is in his cage for a long while. Thanks!

All new birds should have a check up by an avain vet. Then after that on a yearly basis. You cannot always tell if a bird is sick because they are prey animals and hide any sicknesses. By the time a bird is showing signs of sickness it may be too late! That could be not wanting to eat, drink or play. Feathers would be puffed and bird would be on the bottom of the cage. You still have a baby at this age so I suggest you do your homework and learn about the care of parrots, especiall all the toxins in the home and the food. One good way to start is the book Parrots for Dummies. It is a good resource and loaded with helpful basic information. Please be aware that the guardianship of a parrot is a lifetime committment. Whether your work schedule changes, marriage, divorce, moving, or just "not enough time" this bird is yours. Please as so many others do, do not put him in the world of thousands of homeless companion birds.

has he been dna tested for being male??

ok keep an eye on his poop, as awful as it sounds, the poop coloured part will reflect what his eaten, so try not to feed to much high colour foods. poop should be colour (depends on colour of food) white bit an clear liquid also should be odourless

best food are pellets, i feed mine harrisons super fine (though she is uber picky and will not eat them as much if other foods about)

fresh fruit an veggies avoid seeds and stones from the fruit, other then pomegranet seeds
cooked pulses, beans etc

egg white, chicken and the bone as treats, keep an eye on all fattening foods and use them as treats

nut will eat anything we eat! but she can't, i may let her have a lick of curry, but anymore and in the long run can cause her health probs

do not feed advacado's or chocolate! if unsure of new food look them up on net etc

its hard to tell when your parrot is ill, look for subtle changes in charactor, feathers are a good indication if a birds, puffed up an squatting, in time you will get to know your bird an be able to tell changes in its behaviour etc

as your bird is young introduce it to everyday things, my nut is petrified of the hoover. she was 2nd hand, but she loves to watch me preping food for cooking etc

and welcome to the world of sene's :) they love to play and are very naughty birds! but very easy to train! (as long as its what they want to do!)

No, I have not had him dna-sexed yet. I understand it is hard to tell if it is a boy or girl, I unfortunantley live in a house full of boys and call everything "him". Thanks for the advice!

lol rio reason i ask is when the females come into season, my experiance is, they are a hand full! and become very territorial over there chosen man! but you can cross that bridge when you come to it lol

for now just teach it the basic's no biting, step up and step down and try to get the bird into a routine of bed time and time for up lol

Suebee is speaking from experience since she's got nut to deal with! LoL

lol mikey i love her all the same, more now she's outta season lol

Tell me about it...now Willie is out of season, I can be around him more. He was driving me up the walls, he's rough when he's in season....screams non-stop so fourth so on... now he's just being his usual self. Im glad Dixie don't do that, unless she's showing the mating move, she usually gets love. We do not encourage them during the season.... now its over, peaceful household again... :)

lol amen to that lol nut is now very playfull and intent on stalking our toes, she is such a bully lol

mikey or Suebee, how will i know when my green cheek is in season, he is only 10 weeks right now, also the pooh, yah i feed him veggies he loves sweet potatos but the pooh is the same color as it! also when i give grapes he squrits! ahhh...im thinking i really need to send off for a flight suit from pamperd peeps, because he pooh all over the place, it dosent bother me just more cleaning that needs to be done. i know some say we can potty traiin them?

ok time your bird, an take it back to the cage near its poops time, when it poops praise him, and as they get older they will get the general idea

nut is good at goin over her cage, my brother use to do this method, but it really depends on how excited, distracted she is, and accidents will happen,

as for banks season, i've no idea, but please don't be worried about it as all birds will have different behaviours, and not all like how nut was, as she was moved to a new home and away from my brother while in season, and as soon as her main cage came up she went well nuts lol

but she has settled into our family life really well considering she has to now interact with 3 ppl plus there friends, wheras before she was solely with my brother

as for poop i have sheets of news paper down, in the most likely hit places lol and about to have flooring in my room changed to wood lol
