Hi Im new to this site,Just got a African Grey about a month and half ago.I love him so much.I happen to be in a pet store with my granddaughter she loves going there when she vists me in Florida.Well I had no intenion of buying anthing except a toy for her dog when she happen to spot this bird,oh granma look he so cute.Just then the saleperson walks over and starts telling me all about him.Well I come home with a parrot who is fourteen years old and his name is Pepper.Well let me tell you its been quite a month with him.Im still trying so hard to make him happy.He has come a long way in the month but every day is different.They say do not put him bye the window in these books I bought and that is were I had him,now iI move him and all of a sudden he has stop talking and he won.t come out of this cage.and he scream alot when we want him to steep up.What is this screaming all of sudden when we come near him? He was find before but now its like he is a grouch.

Make sure you give him lots and lots of attention!
The screaming may be just because he's scared since everything is new and he's still settling in. Also could be from bad past experiences. Wait a few weeks and see if he stops this. It might also be just cause he's excited - and is telling you so.

Why on earth do they say to NOT put him by a window? The only thing I can think of is if the window is open and it is cold out he might get a chill, but other than that having him BY the window would be my recommendation. Thats where Auggie's cage has always been.

I'm not all that familiar with greys, so maybe there is a good reason, but I can't imagine what it would be. The book didn't give any reasons?
Perhaps those experienced with greys will chime in, but generally you would want your birds to get natural sunlight.

I have a baby grey and am by no means experienced, I have read that as well and I think the only reason is because of the risk of cold draft and the opposite being extreme heat rays. Since she lives in Florida I don't think there is a big concern for cold drafts and depending on where the position of the window is in the house to where the sun rises and sets I think it would be fine. When I first brought my baby home I had him at the window and then I read the same thing and moved him but then I live in Canada where it can get quite chilly, now the nicer weather is here I can put him back by the window as it is in an area that is heavily shady by trees so there is no risk of the sun beaming directly on him to cause heat exhaustion.
I think he means DIRECTLY next to a window...direct sunlight, too hot.
BY a window, like AD said, is good though. I've always kept my old Lovebird near a window too, just not in direct sunlight.

Pepper sounds wonderful. I too have a young grey Timneh. About the window - I did read not to put greys too near a window because they can be easily frieghtened by something outside. Greys can be spooked like a horse very easily. My Rosie is near a window but not too near that she feels trapped in the cage if a big bird flies by outside. Try not to react to he screaming. If you react to it the screams will only get worse. Greys have very special needs. They need daily stimulation of the brain through toys, teaching tricks, music and on and on. You should be taking bird out of cage at least 2 times a day for lovin and just spending time with you and family. It is a wonderful bonding thing to hand feed your grey some soft mush foods. Oatmeal, corn meal mixed with baby foods or the hand feeding formulas. The forum has many people with greys to help you. just ask away. I hope it works out for the both of you.

I also read a couple of different things that said that you shouldn't put them by the window. One of them said it was because birds and things outside could frighten and/or stress them out. I'm not sure why. Seems to me like they would enjoy seeing what's going on outside but what do I know. I do leave the blinds open for him durring the day so he can see what's going on. It doesn't seem to stress him out and this way he always knows when mommy gets home! I know this thread was started a while ago but I thought I'd let you know what I read.
The more they can see of the outdoors the better. Though they should have places to escape/hide in their cage.
I think the warnings about being close to windows is more often related to temperature where a window provides little insulation, possible drafts, and direct sunlight - the last of which is good in moderation, but they need to have areas of shade.
So all in all, provided they have places in their cage to escape/hide/find-shade then I cannot see how being near windows would not be a really GOOD thing.
