This is Wendell!

just one question, im feeding him a hand rearing formula 3 times a day. when should i start weaning? and whats the best way to go about it?

Do i just take out the lunch time meal, and put some pellets and fruit in his cage to encourage him to eat it? then take out the morning meal and so on? :rainbow1:

thank you.

Please be very very careful and cautious, it is such a big responsibility, that little ones life depends entirely on you.

Did you research, gaining some knowledge, pertaining to hand rearing?

If you are ever unsure of anything, please just ask.... many knowledgeable members on our forum, always willing to assist.

yeah, i did a fair bit of research, rang some breeders for info and tips on feeding(and when to stop feeding!) and been to a few pet stores. I just read on that site you linked that he could be ready to start weaning and was after a few tips on how to make it easier.

EDIT: will his beak stay black? or turn orange eventually?

I am no bird expert at all, sure other members will willingly assist you.

I do know that his beak will gradually turned from black to orange over time. His eyes too will changed from black to a lovely brown/amber colour.

What a cutie! I love seeing all the rainbow lorikeets in the wild over here :) (Queensland, Australia) They are just beautiful! I don't have any advice for you I'm sorry, but you sure are keen hand rearing a baby with no experience!

I thought lorikeets were nector eaters? or drinkers?

Hi I have a yellow streaked lory.Lories cannot eat seed or pellets [ever].They eat a white powder substance, mines called [lory life] food made especially for lorys. They need that and water at all times[to sustain their well being.]They can have juicier fruits and vegtables. But the lory food they eat is their main source of nutrition. Its going to be hard to wean them on to this.Im floored they let him go with out telling you this.lories do not have strong enough beaks to crush hard things. Please your lory is only going to live if it has that formula or knows how to eat the powder. You need help.On a positive note their great pets .They need a large wide cage and TONS of toys and swings also foot toys [they play on their backs] Mine can talk in phrases and likes to put his tongue in my ear. Also a big show off. Please get lory food .Good Luck

Always sad to see breeders selling unweaned babies to people... so irresponsible. ):

I don’t have any experience with weaning birds, sorry. I’m sure more people will be along soon to help.

Your baby is very cute, I love lorikeets. My first bird was a scaly breasted lorikeet, he was a crazy little thing, very cute though. I would've gotten another lorikeet in a heartbeat but I couldn't stand the constant projectile liquid poo... lol.

Hi, yeah i know they don't eat pellets( a girl at the pet shop suggested it to help make them less messy etc, ive gone back and let her know she is wrong. in a nice way of course) ive been slowly introducing lori wet mix, in with his hand rearing formula. Doing about 50/50 then over the next couple of weeks ill wipe out hand rearing mix altogether, then ill introduce dry mix. He has just started eating completely on his own now, He should soon be pretty much weaned! He is 8 nearly 9 weeks old now. I already have some fruits and veggies in his cage to tempt him! Thank you for your help!:D

Heres some pictures of Wendell.
