My household has adopted a 4 year old Sun conure named ZaZu.

We have no experience but with the help of the Internet and members here we'll make sure he's happy and healty.

Anyways we will be asking a lot of questions.

We've had him now for nearly a week now. He seems to like me the most he'll let me pet him and once I got him to step up.

My first question is when can I let him fly around the house he seems to want to get out of his cage?

Well, are his flight feathers in? Also if you let him fly around make sure your ceiling fan is off and any windows or mirrors are covered. Also make sure he has a soft surface under him until you get an idea as to how well he can fly. Keep water away from the room of flight.

Personally I clip my birds non-flighted for their safety. I've had birds that were experiences flyers but had accidents where they were startled and crashed into a wall.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I am a new bird owner myself. Have had my conure since May 21st. Still learning.

When I wake up in the morning, I have a quick training session and then leave the door open to allow Bodhi to play on his cage. Bodhi's wings are clipped (were clipped when I got him), but I work with him flying to me on command short distances.

I want him to get use to flying to me first, so that if he gets somehwere high in the house, (bookshelf, light fixture, etc.) I will be able to get him down.

Lots of luck with your new feathered family member!

And if you have dogs/cats, put them away! Good idea to get him used to stepping up on a stick, this will prove very useful! It is only natural he would be a bit hand shy at first.

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new sun conure (love their coloring!)

If he seems interested in coming out, I would encourage you to do so in a safe environment --- animals put away, fans off, windows/mirrors covered as everyone has stated.

I think that a good command would actually be "Home" where you have him learn to go back when he's told to for maybe sleeping or eating. That or practicing to step up won't hurt ;) . If he's flighted, it also might be a great idea to teach him how to recall so he can practice flying safely (indoors)

Welcome! I have a soft spot for sun conures, beautiful birds. :orange:

I'll start a new thread later for questions but since I have the attention of a few. Do these birds stop eating when full or can I over feed him with treats? Really seems to like wheat bread.
