Parrots
2 year old Rainbow Lorikeet - Rio
Hi

I'm from South Africa and I want to get a parrot (cockatoo) I would prefer a parrot that is 1 year old, but everyone I spoke to said not to as the are very noisy and scream most of the time, they also said they are to good pets around small children and I have a 5 year old daughter that lovers all animals.

any bird can be noisey, though i have read the too's scream to be earth shattering! as for being around children,
i cannot leave my nut around young children just in case! she has bitten them in the past, but each bird is different

i think before getting a too, go visit them, research there behaviour, cost of food, toys vets and your time! also plan it for 30yrs plus

I have been downloading information

thats great to read ;) these birds are a joy to care for, but when they behave badly it is a shock

i have a small sene that rules the roost lol i'd hate to think what i'd be like against a too! lol

Welcome! I'm new too and will soon be getting a Yellow-Sided Green Cheek Conure. Big birds are beautiful and have heard them before, wow are their calls loud. Have you thought about going with a slightly smaller Parrot, maybe a smaller species of Cockatoo (if there are any). :)

The smaller Cockatoos are Goffins, Bare eyed, Lesser Sulphur Crested, Rose Breasted, etc. BUT any Cockatoo can give a nasty bite as with any bird period, you need to teach the child not to provoke a parrot not the other way around. Yes their scream is ugly, for such pretty birds, their scream can get to ya. But mine don't scream that often. I love my Cockatoo! Care needs to be taken with them as they are prone to self mutilation and feather plucking. By getting one you need to spend time with them and also teach them to be self sufficient where they don't rely on you 24/7, they will learn to play on their own without being over dependent.

Welcome and as you have already found, there is a wealth of information here.

Cockatiels are members of the cockatoo family, and Bob is fairly quiet. He has his loud moments, but on the whole he is quiet. He also rarely bites, but when he does it hurts, and is usually due to a misunderstanding.
