Newspapers questions

I don't use newspaper I used to when I had a cockatiel 10 years ago, he died 8 years ago, but he was always tore it apart now with my two current cockatiels I use LM Farms cage liners they are a little big for my cage so instead of cutting them I just fold them to fit works great no problems cleaning them they are only $2.99 at petsmart and they come with 7 to a box which I figured out you save at least 50 cents over a week by using these than paying at least 50 cents a day for newspapers. They are paper with a thin plastic lining on the bottom of them.

Well the vet had told me that the newspaper ink is not harmful to birds at all. The only thing it does is get them dirty. However, she didn't say anything about EATING the actual paper. Which is why I'm just gonna invest in a cage with a tray bottom soon enough. And then just remove the paper alltogether. I can just clean out the tray daily, afterall.

I would still put paper in the tray. It makes cleaning a lot easier!!!

My rainbow lori will lie on the bottom of the cage, stick her feet through the grate and pull the paper up so she can rip it a bit - once shes gotten it, its easy enough for her to shred (and mind you, most lories i know sleep on their backs in a cage so its not like lying on the bottom is uncomfortable for her!)
The grate does nothing for her!!

my galah shreds newspaper all day, he loves it, but doesn't actually eat it. i dont use grates at all, a friend of mine had her bird get caught in it and broke her leg. plus i think they must be very uncomfortable to walk on for birds that like to be at the bottom! i just change the paper everyday..simples!

I use newspaper in the bottom of Bella's cage but their is a grate, and a good inch in between the paper and the grate. Bella is definitely a top dweller though. She has no interest in anything below her highest perch except for her food bowls.

I do change the paper everyday. But not every 10 seconds. Which is pretty much how long it takes her to wreck armageddon on it. I don't like grates either, but it's better than having her eat the newspaper. I don't think she was LITERALLY eating the newspaper, but at least now my mom's mind is at ease.

As much as newspaper makes it way easier to clean, I think that when I have enough funds for a new cage I'll just leave a bare tray. It's pretty easy to just take the tray and wash it quickly daily!

You do not want for your bird to have contact with their fecal matter. It can cause many different illnesses in birds.
