I started with free flighting my GVM in the house.
I held my arm crooked in front of my face.
C'mere Rudy! When he launches and lands, he gets a pistachio.
I started with him at the back of a chair and progressed distances.
At a full one year of age full feathered (i clipped the last 3 feathers of each wing at 3 mos.) The distance in the house progressed. He now flys from the sunroom to the kitchen at about 50'.
While my voice commands have been consistent. Food or treats has not been consistent. I sensed early on that he simply wanted to fly. So i used voice commands.
Moving forward. Rudy had been conditioned to a flight harness at an early age. I walked him outside every opportunity I could. Think time it takes to walk a dog daily.. Ok even though he was harnessed. I have been reluctant to let him fly to me. I had one accident last summer. I have tossed him up in the air, when ever anyone asks whether he can fly. One particular day, the wind caught under him and he shot over my head and....... the leash slipped off my hand. luckily.. it took a while.. he was found 80' up.. I got really lucky because the tree was next to a large parking lot.
Ever heard of fireman rescuing at cat from a tree? Well thanks to station 4 WIlmington Delaware. It took no more than 15 minutes to extend the ladder. Rudy was very receptive to the fireman. I could tell the poor guy was frustrated that he was stuck in the tree.
Anyways... while I use voice caommands, they sometimes work. I use treats too. What he seems to be most interested in is when I hold the phone up to take pics. He has had thousands of photos. I wonder if he responds better to phones than voice and or treats. time will tell.. Might be a combination of all three.
I'm sure that consistent rewards is the best rule of thumb. Go to this thread to see some recent free flight training pics..
