Merlin just had a bit of onion from an onion bahji by accident. Should I be overly worried or just keep an eye on him?
Is there anything anyone can suggest

onions are in the no-ish list for birds, but nuts had food that had onion in, i've read a debate about cooked or raw etc but as SB says keep an eye on merlin

i dno longer give nut foods cooked with onion etc just to be safe!

Hi dear,
You should not be worried, It is not harmful for the birds.
It is the tasty food for the parrot. You can give it to the parrot along with chilly.

When I was reading about onions and birds, the only article I found that had any real information said that there hadn't been any actual research on onions and birds, but to not feed them just in case. It said that with dogs and cats (where the research has been done) long term exposure can cause hemaltyic anemia, which can be serious.

I wouldn't worry about one exposure too much though. I gave Puck some salsa with onions in it before I read about it, and he was fine. Now I just pick the onions out of stuff I give him, just to be on the safe side.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong! This was the only factual article I could find!

Onion is only low-grade toxic to parrots. You need tno worry about an accidental nibble, but please do not intentionally feed them onion. Long term, it will damage their liver. Even if they like the taste, do not give it to them.
