I was preparing to rescue some pionus ( no bird shelters here and its as good as buying birds) and had custom made a stainless steel cage 185cm x 185cm x 90cm). However, as its the lunar new year and it will not be shipped to me till the end of this month. I had bought some toys etc reading n preparing for the pionus. I have not much experience in bigger birds as my other birds are 5 conures. I do have some fundamental knowledge in understanding bird's behaviour and have trained my birds to play fetch, as well as play bird basketball (birds rush for e ball before dunking it for rewards)
Last saturday, I was looking through the local ad for some bird accessories and I came across an ad about an orange winged amazon. The pictures looked pretty sad, it was chain to a mini stand and was only given sunflower seeds to consume.
I felt quite lost, torn between getting it to offer it a better life to the feeling of am I reading for this for about 15 mins. Kind of a moral dilemma.
About 30 mins later I was like what the heck, I contacted the seller, grabbed my bird carrier and went to the seller's place.
At the seller's place. I noticed that the amazon was only offer sunflower seeds. It was pooping black / dark green poop. Its eyes seemed to be partially open, it seemed lethargic.
The seller doesnt seem to be have handled the bird as it was trying to get away from him after he release the chain catch.
Fast forward i brought him home and placed him in a tiny cage as I had no spare cage. I searched online and acquired a cage and had it shipped with express shipping. Not the best as its only 90cm length by 70cm by 170cm. I placed some spare perch and new spare toys that i had, when transfering him he panicked and bite my finger till it bled.I managed to adjust his chain out of e cage and used a cutter to cut the chain.
In the larger cage, i offered it roudybush breeder pellets mixed with egg food which he readily accepted.
A day later he seemed more calm, i offered him some roudybush california blend which he ate from my hand. I find him pretty easy to work with as he would growl if he didnt like something. In addition, I began handfeeding him with zupreem enhanced plus handfeeding formula (he didnt want it as he was not comfortable with the syringe, after i pretended to drink it and offered him he tried it and loved it now). I feed him by opening the cage with my hand within the cage. I have also misted him as I noticed that he began molting on the third day. He seems pretty happy now and twitches and fluffs up when i speak to him.
He is not really afraid of my hand now but he doesnt step up and i do not want to push him for it.
He now understands basic commands. When i say 'kitchi' he rushes to the cage bar for a head scratch.
The issue I need help with is:
His nails etc are overgrown and as he doesnt step up, I cant bring him to the groomer. I dont want to force him.
Will getting a sand perch help in the interim?
He sneezes but not often more like once today morning.
I guess cause he is molting and 3 other crimson hybrid conures are molting too. I will get the rainbow vacuum cum air purifier today or tomorrow. Hope this helps.
Based on the above, any advise will be great.
Video of him. It will be 1 week being with me. He is 1yr+.
