ordering a new cage for Freedom today, need some advice!

Ok, so when last I posted about cages for Freedom, we decided to get her a nice big walk in aviary. Thing was, she hadn't popped any welds yet. She has now popped quite a few welds. Should we scrap the idea of a huge cage "that she won't test because it is so big" and go with one of those stainless steel supermax macaw jails? I still think it possible she wouldn't test the big cage because there would be so much space and so much to do, buuuut now that she has had experience popping welds should we just go ahead and assume she will keep popping welds? Ordering the cage today, we need something else to put her in ASAP.

Big Parrots and Cages are commonly a challenge to see, which will survive the other. The cage commonly looses this challenge as a result of just what you are seeing. They go for either the welds or the bolts... Our Amazon goes for the bolts even when I use the nylock style.

To my understanding Mac's love the challenge!

The folks I know have a huge cage that is filled with chew toys. But, in the back of my mind, if a Mac elects to pop's the welds, they will fail.

Remember to get a full height door and as wide as you can find.

My little guys are housed in stainless steel due to tiny Lilly chewing some powder coating off Fang’s previous (brand new!) cage. I cannot speak for the strength of weld points as my guys are the small beaked variety but AT LEAST there’s no powder coating to worry about!

I believe ParrotGenie has stainless steel for his umbrella cockatoos. Not sure he’s had any issues with weld points but I recall his female cocky managed to get her head wedged in the grate on the bottom. From memory i think the grate on the really big cages comes in two halves and she lifted one half and got her head stuck, sustaining some quite serious injuries - he’s made d****d sure she can’t do it again!

Alright, so we decided on a supermax style cage for our little would-be fugitive. It is still a little bigger than her current cage, but when looking at the fine print of shipping them, we decided it would be too difficult to have the large cage delivered at this time. I still really want to get her into an indoor walk-in aviary, but that will have to wait a little while. It is going to be enough of a struggle to have the supermax delivered(wooden shipping crate?!), but we will figure it out. Going to contact our neighbors to the North today and see if we could have a large truck deliver a big bird cage there for us.



Going to try and retrofit her current cage a little bit and, if possible, turn it into a cockatiel kingdom. Was thinking about putting Rin and Boomer in there, after a little more work on trust building with them individually. I think Alex is too old and lazy to appreciate the space as much. He is happy in the house he has now I think, but Rin obviously wants more space. He is just a baby bird yet, and has all the energy that goes with that. And Boomer is still pretty young as well. Mr. Grumps is more of a climber these days. Not even hopping around as much as he used to. Runs, walks, or climbs where he wants to go.

The supermax arrived yesterday. Was delivered at our friends' who run the rescue. We helped unload the truck, broke down the pallet crate they had constructed to protect the supermax in transit, and brought it home.



We have not had time to set it up yet, but boy I do NOT regret this purchase. This thing is solid as a ROCK and heavier than an african elephant lmao. The cage panels are HUGE, it makes my heart so happy. She is going to have plenty of space, even tho it isn't as much space as the aviary would have given her.



I don't think our weld popper will be popping these welds any time soon. WOW. Went with a King's cage, and really think it was worth the extra money. This thing is solidly built.



Plan is to try and source some thick heavy duty canvas and make a cage cover, since she will be moving out to the living room/kitchen area. We think she would be happier more in the center of the action in the house than in the birdroom. There will be a few issues, but we will tackle them one at a time. She likes to go to bed just after sunset, and screams if you don't go say goodnight and turn off the birdroom light on her schedule. We stay up past sunset tho, so thus the heavy canvas cover. We might figure out a sleeping cage in the birdroom tho if she is happier like that. We will play it by ear.



She has been super affectionate lately. REALLY getting into the head scratchies and being a total lovebird. Except yesterday evening. We had been out all day doing the cage and a shopping trip, and she was maaaaaad lmao. But she is over it again as of this AM and is back to being a cuddlemac.
