I have a female parakeet and she loves perching on my finger but only if she is inside the cage. I can put her and my face up against the sides of the cage at the same time and she won’t do anything, maybe rub her beak against me. Yet when I take her out she won’t stay on my finger and will run away.

I have her finger trained like I said but we’re having trouble with out of cage activities, is there any way to help with this? I know it’s a slow process to eventually get her on my shoulder, but I just want her to feel safe outside the cage too.

Thank you for any replies.

Hi have you considered trying touch training? It’s likely that inside the cage you are interesting enough to interact with, but outside the cage is more interesting to them than you are. If you teach them to touch the end of a stick and reward them for it, you can start teaching a bird how to follow and get them to certain locations, eventually building up to flight training (pointing the stick elsewhere so the bird has to fly over to touch it for the reward - works wonders for getting them back into the cage if you can’t get them in yourself). I recommend checking out BirdTricks videos on how to accomplish this. [ame="https://youtu.be/8Oprxi_HWME"]Every Bird Owner Should Be Doing This ONE Thing - YouTube[/ame]

Thank you! I’ll definitely go check out their videos
