Pellets for one dinner?

Hey guys,

Jasper only gets homemade meals, but there are occasions when I can't be home for his dinner and not getting back until later on.

I've been giving him his dinner cold instead of heating it (there are cooked things in it, however) and also giving him his "snacky time" at the same time (seed mix).

The issue is on Sunday I might be gone from ~2pm - 10pm. I don't want to give him his dinner at 2pm and have it sit in there for 8 hours. I was wondering if in these instances (which aren't often) if it would be safer for me to leave him some pellets for his dinner instead? I have the Roudybush ones, that's what his breeder used when he was a baby. Currently he only gets a few a day as treats.

Not sure how many he'd need for dinner?

Thoughts? Only alternative is having someone come in to feed him but that's $30 so I only like to use that in very limited instances.

My birds get pellets in their cage all day and breakfast and dinner at appropriate times.

Romeo protests... a LOT but he eats his pellets.

Stephen has no problem with eating his pellets.

Good quality pellets are a good thing to feed.

What if you made some birdie bread loaded with some of the good stuff, can Jasper eat this? If so is it better or worse than pellets for Ekkie's? If OK leave him some 'til you get back? Or leave him with a big breakfast as you leave plus some hidden treats to find, few nuts, few seeds, some raw veggies, piece of fruit. Aware of the possibility of upsetting an Ekkie's diet and the consequences. I'm sure he won't starve. Probably be more put out you are not there - "where's my mum?" :)
 
I leave pellets out all day, too, but I know that an aeclectus has special digestive needs. Maybe use the SEARCH tab to look for Eclectus/pellets related threads? I'm sure some Eclectus experts will be along... quite a few here.
 
Ah I never thought of birdie bread. I have some made up (frozen) it's this one: Bird Bread Baking Mixes from Things for Wings, Parrot Supplies, Toys, Food and More

Maybe I could leave a square of this + pellets for dinner, then his snacky time on the other side of the cage.

Thanks for the replies so far! And yes, if someone with an Ekkie could weigh in that'd be great as well. I'm hesitant with pellets for the obvious reasons with Eclectus parrots but wasn't sure if a one-time-thing would be suitable.

I think birdie bread is perfect for these sorts of situations (try my recipe! Just don't cook the veggies first. Don't know why I wrote that). Birdie bread is a nutritious, filling snack/meal that can be left out for most of the day. If you give him pellets, I'd make sure to give Jasper Goldn'obles or TOPs since they are minimally-ish processed and don't have synthetic vitamins or colours. You could also leave a bowl of raw, sliced carrots, kale, dandelion greens, apples, a few nuts, and other stuff that doesn't spoil when left out. Maybe some puffed rice or whatever.

Katie Parker gets pellets during the day, goldenfeast goldenobles I. I work a standard 9-5 and don't want to leave fresh stuff in his cage for that long,l to spoil and attract ants. Plus his room has carpet making even more perilous. Your boy will be fine for a single meal.
 
Late to the party, buuuuuuut...

Yep, I think birdie bread is the perfect answer. But that said, having pellets for one meal wouldn't really be an issue. Especially if you use organic, uncolored pellets. It's the cumulative effect that causes some of the issues with toe-tapping and wing-flipping.

another vote for birdie bread...in a pinch Costco has had the aussie bites organic mini muffins. Wrangler isnt a huge fan of birdie bread and dislikes any type of dried fruit, including raisins, so I resort to mini wheats or triscuits. Not an ideal choice, but he had wingflipping reaction to pellets, so those are off the menu.

Ah sweet of you to put this up but as far as I know Ekkies are just sensitive to a complete/pelleted diet full stop. :)

Is this what you give Maxx? Is he OK with it - no signs of wing flipping or toe tapping?

I have used it with no ill affects in the past was just putting up the link. I have changed to more fresh feeds then anything else. I do keep a bowl of volkmans super hookbill and I mix in the Eclectus feed in his cage at all times. I feed a good size bowl of fresh stuff around noon everyday and that is his daily food. other then some treats he may get through out the day.
 
Jasper went right to town on his birdie bread Sunday before I left. He's never seen so much of it at once before, he probably thought, "eat it all before she realizes and takes it away!" :P

Not sure how much of the pellets he ate as there was a pile of "sawdust" at the bottom of his cup but he seemed totally fine when I got back.

Good to know this is an option for the future when it happens again!
 
Ha ha Jasper will be waiting for birdie bread Sunday to swing around now! Good all went well. :-)
