Are African grey parrot and Amazon parrot high maintenance pet? Please help.

In general, parrots are high maintenance companions. Perhaps a bit more than smaller birds due to louder vocalizations, more destructive behaviors, and ability to create a larger mess.

I have both a grey and amazon and consider the workload equivalent. Vastly different personalities, folks who will have a single bird must choose based on characteristics and expectations. They are very different!!

Parrots of all kinds are high maintenance...and larger ones are like having a flying 3-4 year-old that NEVER grows up and has severe respiratory sensitivities w/ a chainsaw and foghorn on its face and sensory issues.

YES, they are very high maintenance. They are extremely expensive and time consuming and intelligent (and that isn't always a good thing). For perspective, a 200 lb dog, is WAY easier to care for (having done it)...WAY easier...Parrots can live for 100+ years depending on the type...

Parrots do not make 'good' pets.

Human's commonly are overly romantic about the joy of Parrots and are just as commonly upset when the reality of have a Parrot in their home becomes apparent when a family member is seriously bit or screams hours after hours.

If you are looking for a 'good' pet consider a dog, I assure you, you will be happier with that choice.

I see that you are from India. In the Indian context both the Grey Parrot and the various Amazon Species - there are nearly 30 of them of which perhaps 5 or so are available in India are both very high maintenance.

As others have pointed out they are prone to respiratory illnesses and there are very few qualified Avian Vets in India who can treat Parrots for specific diseases.

Though I have personally not kept either a Grey or an Amazon, I have known people who acquired them and lost them after 3 or 4 years and in some cases few months.

So very true. I have never really considered my Sam, the BFA a pet. More like a husband that never grew up! Is that really a thing? LOL

My Bill is a Yellow Naped Amazon. He is a pretty easy friend to take care of as long as you keep your skin out of his mouth! Bill is very moody, and at the flip of a switch and for reasons only he knows he will just bite. It's unfortunate that he does this, cause I would love to do more with him but he really hurts me bad sometimes. It's not all the time, sometimes he'll go a month or more without making me bleed? I can put my hands right in his cage, pick him up with my arm and play on the floor with him. I love having him stroll into my living room from his house in the next room. He looks so happy coming out to see me. I just always have my guard up 24/7 with his beak. After more then a year I found that he is just set in his ways and I live around his rules. Being that he attacked my wife twice he is always in his cage when she is home. It's a big cage and he really likes moving around in it and playing. I put him outside in our screened in porch almost every day. in the winter I just open the door to his house and he goes up top to play. He eats good, gets lots of out of the cage play time but still gets mad and will get me. Sometimes I open up his door and I can tell it's talk to you later bro time. He knows when mom comes home it's time for him to go home. He will go in his house and I will shut the door.

Thanks Noodle, but it true, my green guy is not shy when it comes to taking skin samples! Even though he is a sweet hart, he is not afraid to put anyone in their place. My family thinks I'm crazy cause I always say it's not his fault. I always have an answer as to why he bites. They just think he's a mean bird. They never get what I get, not that it's an excuse for what he does. Both of my birds never do any wrong! Lol

And having Amy the Blue Front for over thirty years,I STILL can't figure that boy out . As mentioned by others,there are times ( A LOT actually) that he is the sweetest creature alive..especially when going for rides in the car. He will sit for hours on my shoulder as we drive a long,preen my beard,NIBBLE my ear ( NOT BITE! LOL) and chew my fingers all the while gurgling at me..then there are other times where he will lunge and try to remove flesh for no cause. He actually fractured my then-girlfriends finger in an instant ( she didn't understand "body language". Most of the time he will go to strangers..loves good food...loves his little brother BB..loves showers with me or outside with a misting bottle.
Yep...he has cost me bux at his CAV more than once..five stitches in his tongue when Smokey bit it..a VERY costly heart condition evaluation..the food I make and he tosses on the floor and I pray he does that for another thirty years.

My Too throws her food all over. Bill eats like a pig and never misses a drop! The noises he makes when he's cleaning a chicken bone is some pretty sweet music! You can tell it's his favorite thing to put in his mouth, next to my finger! Lol
I enjoy having someone give him something so I can see their face when he gets excited cleaning off a bone!
