So our silly boy, Fred, loves to pick at the bricks around our fireplace. Is this something we need to be concerned about and not allow or is he just wearing down his beak?

I always start by stating " I am not an expert" but ...
I have read that cockatiels do not need "grit" in there diet.
If it was me I would try cutting some cardboard pieces to fit around the bricks and tape them in place. Try getting some kind of mineral block that is sold at a pet shop instead, I don't think bricks would be real good for them.

Yup, tex is right. They do not need grit. In fact, birds may get crop impaction if offered grit and they overindulge.

I'd keep him off those bricks as well. :)
