My father currently has one Sun Conure and I wanted to buy him another Green Cheek Conure since he is planning on getting another conure. I attached a picture of a picture of a "Fancy Green Cheek Conure" that I saw at Petco and it had beautiful colors. I did research beforehand and was advised to make sure the conure looks healthy when choosing. These are a few concerns that I noticed and I need advice to see if any of these things are problems.
-the feathers on the end of the tail seem to be slightly damaged.
-there are a lot of little white spots under the tail also, not sure if it's poop or something to worry about.
-the conure seemed kind of timid in the cage compared to the other conures. Will a lot of taming fix this or is that the individuals natural personality?
-the colors are beautiful. Will the colors stay this nice after their molt?

Thanks for all of your help!!!

I'll try to answer your questions the best that I can. The tail feathers are fine. That is normal from being rubbed up against things. Pat had the same thing. It went away when I got him here.
The white stuff looks like poop to me, but I could be wrong. A decent bath and that will clean up.
He/she is in a new environment and will be timid. Many people poking a prodding will have that effect on almost anyone.
Looks like he/she is going through their first molt right now. The colors should stay the same, or even get brighter. I've attached a photo of Pat who is still going through his first molt, but should be done soon.

The about is an after picture:

This is a before molt picture.
I hope that this helps.

Usually it is not a good idea to buy a bird as a gift for someone unless you know the person is in the market for a new bird of the species you are considering, but since your father has indicated he would be looking for a new conure, it might be OK.....

The feathers just look like they've been dragged around the cage...a condition many birds will have if the cage is small and/or the bird does not have out of cage time and/or there are too many birds in the cage.....

The white spots sound like poop residue and the timidity is probably just being inundated by all the people staring at them and/or poking at them...give the bird a bath after you bring it home.....

While there is always an adjustment period when a bird moves into a new environment and there is normally an amount of training that will need to be performed, most birds and their owners normally find a happy medium and accept each other, but that can really only be found out after bringing the bird home.....

Many birds are going through a molt right now & it looks like this green cheek is yet to go through its molt, but yes, the molted in feathers will look nice and have sharp colors.....the majority of conure molt their feathers, providing they are healthy birds, twice a year.....

Hope this helps with your questions.....

His tail feathers are tattered looking because of it rubbing against things in his cage and because he's young. When they're young they tend to not care about their feathers. He will learn how to take care of them as he gets older. He looks a little dirty, nothing a nice bath wont take care of. Conures are very playful, I'm sure once he's being handled regularly he will be quite the character. He's a yellow sided (I'm 99% sure of this) lol petco calls them "fancy" & it drives me crazy! His colors will probably get even more vibrant when he molts.

I do have to say that you should be prepared incase your dad's sun and a new bird don't get along.

Good luck!

Sorry Dr J, didn't mean to match your post, just didn't see yours 'til after I posted mine.....

Can I get help identifying the type of this Green Cheek Conure?

I posted a thread yesterday about this Green Cheek that I saw at Petco and thanks Kimn, DJ an Weco for your help. It was labeled Fancy Green Cheek Conure at Petco. I was told that it most likely is a yellow sided GCC but I called Petco today and they said their paperwork shows that it is a Pineapple GCC. I looked at Google pictures online and it resembles a Yellowsided and not a Pineapple. Can you guys help me in your knowledge and experience for what type of variation is this GCC? I know Petco ended up telling me pineapple but then again, it's Petco. I was really hoping to find a Yellowsided and thought this guy was a Yellowsided. The picture is attached. Thanks again for all of your help!

Looks a bit like Pat, whom I've been told is a Yellow Sided GCC. The one in the picture has more red on the chest area than my Pat does. Those pictures that I posted are of my Pat if that helps you any.
