Please help! Lovebird has open wound on back!

Wow do I need help with this! I cannot afford a vet but I'm willing to do do whatever it takes to help this little girl/boy

I purchased these two as a pair but one had a small open wound on its back between it's wings close to its head. *At first I thought it was due to mating but the wound has not healed after a couple months now. *It looks wet due to the blood. *I do not notice these birds fighting ever. *They are bonded. *They are in a cage alone together.*

I read about betadine? And thought perhaps I should dissenfect the wound and then I am not sure what to do??? I need some advice please. *

I can send over a good picture if you want. *

Also if betadine is not right please let me know!

And please don't give me a hard time about not taking the bird to the vet! I want to buy I cannot afford their high costs. *

Do not use betadine. Can you post a pic?
My advice for now is to wash with a warm 50/50 was of water/aloe. Purchase some Manukah Honey from a health foo d store. It can be expensive and no, regular honey does not work. Manukah honey has natural antibiotic and healing abilities.
Of course my most recommended advice is vet check due to there may be a systemic infection from the wound and antibiotics are needed.

Another member mentioned that Cayenne Pepper is quite good when powder is mixed with water into a paste. Crushed (must be crushed) fresh garlic has a potent antibiotic, but the allicin (useful stuff) doesn't hang around long at room temperature, so you can't store it as such.

I find it odd that a wound could be present for such a long period of time, it must be getting re-opened. If it looks wet, but it might not be blood; you need to give it a clean.

I agree with greycloud about the Manuka honey . we use it for all kinds of cuts scrapes and burns and it works beautifully, the stuff is really amazing

Hi, I am not a bird expert or vet but have been a nurse for 10 years... I'm concerned that if the wound keeps re-opening that it is either infected or requires sutures to close it or both... a pic would be helpful... if its not infected we might use steri-strips (the white tape that stays on for 1-2 weeks until it falls off on its own) to close it but I have no idea if these are safe for birds or not, I imagine they may try to "preen" them off which would just make it worse? Im not sure what they use for birds that have had surgery...

I've heard of mānuka honey being used before, but iirc there hasn't been much in the way of scientific proof, has there?

Don't know about scientific evidence but I know what I see when I use it and it works great. I personally would rather use something natural if it works as well if not better than an antibiotic cream or pill . I am allergic to many antibiotics so I always try to go a more natural route.

They have actually approved manuka honey for use in the burn units in the US. I use this often. I have gotten a cut from a tape strapper before and it gets horribly sore even with antibiotic ointment. If you put manuka honey on it with a bandaid as soon as you cut it, it will never get sore and heal very rapidly. It also works for people with gastric problems. My husband can vouch for that.

Thanks for the link! There don't appear to be too many studies, but if one has personal experience, that's a good start. Seems to be very popular with burns!
