I went to an open house at a rescue today and found a yellow nape with a peculiar behavior. He was all puffed up (fluffy) and looked like he was leaning over his perch. At first I thought he was sick or overweight, but was told later that he was just not happy being relocated for the day and a bit angry with all the people coming and going. Is this a normal behavior?

Bosley will fluff up big and display while leaning over a perch sometimes. It usually happens when a lot of activity is happening that he doesn't understand. For example we got a new couch and during the process of moving the old out,and cleaning and getting the new one in he was like that pacing his perch the whole time.

Could be, i've seen that posture be for ,especially males. Sometimes the puffing up is to make themselves look bigger. Was he lunging /striking ? or just PO'd?

I was told he was just po'd. He was just sitting and eyes open. I was concerned because I had not heard of that behavior before. At the moment, this reminds me of it being a grumpy old man. I believe the bird was a male because it had a male name. Do rescues DNA sex birds as a rule?

Not usually , they have better things to spend monies on, LOL.

I was quite concerned because this was an open house to encourage people to adopt and, of course, I am partial to YNs. If he showed some interest in what was going on around him or his true personality, I may have submitted an application to adopt.

Bosley sat in a rescue for a year because he didn't show interest in people when he met them. I'm not even sure why we chose him, it was a gut feeling. The whole time he was in the rescue he didn't step up for anyone and was not handled.
That bird has become my little snuggle bug, I can do anything with him now. It took all of 4 days once he came home to start building a relationship. Rescues don't do DNA but get as much history about the bird that was surrendered, so they might know he is a male from the owners that gave him up.

Sometimes it takes awhile for them to warm up to folks. Does your pet zon like company? many don't ,especially the ones who haven't been socia;ized well. The ones that are well socialized don't last as long in rescue before someone snaps them up. I'd keep visiting him and see what happens. Might get a better read on him when there aren't as many strangers around.

My rehomed amazon will step up whenever asked. I consider myself lucky with this bird in that there are no negative behaviors.

The bad thing about the rescue is that it is 1 1/2 hours away from me. If I am going to make a trip there I may as well be put to work doing something before leaving. lol.
