Quarantining Parrots

I have a very sick Jenday Conure. The vet recommended a ceramic heat bulb, and a little area for rest (all we can do is supportive care at this point by the sounds of it).

We are going to swap out the 60 watt bulb for a 100 watt bulb later today. The 60 watt bulb is not doing much.

Has anyone else had to quarantine a sick parrot? How did you do your setup, and with what?

This is my current setup if others have suggestions, or critiques

You could get one of those radiant heaters for cages. You could also put a heating pad under the bin.
I would think the light bulbs would interfere with rest.
Are you still planning on the referral?

I have a grow tent that I can zip up and put a cage inside with an oil filled radiant heater under or next to the cage.

We went there yesterday. The avian vet wasn’t in. He only works Monday-Thursday. They had trained staff on site in urgent care. They seen her, and sent her home. They weighed her at 99 grams. She did eat a substantial amount for them. This vet thought Kiwi had strength as she did fly to the vet. They still don’t know what is wrong. They thought sedating her for xrays (diagnostics) wasn’t worth the risks at this point. They were guessing maybe hormones? No idea. I myself haven’t ever dealt with a near death sick parrot before.

This is the heat bulb we bought. It has no light.

That looks good. Just put a blanket over the bin. If you have a small room you can heat with a space heater (bathroom, large closet) then the heater won't have to work so hard. Do ypu have a thermometer in the bin? Watch that it doesn't get too hot.

I dont have a thermometer at this point. When I was at the pet store I couldn’t find one. I was going to check another pet store today for one.

My budgies have had xrays many times and they've done fine. I know it's a risk bit a lot of information can be obtained by imaging. But if they think it's not necessary or worth the risks I understand. That may mean they're not motivated by $$. My vet only charges $100 for imaging including utrasound but some places charge a lot more than that.

Any room thermometercwould work. Get one at walmart or home depot.

The vet did say there is no egg, and vitals are good. I never asked how much imaging would cost. I did ask about separating Kiwi (if she makes it) from her mate permanently. The vets don’t feel separating a bonded pair is the right thing to do. They told me to just quarantine Kiwi until she’s 100% then suggested keeping her warm.

I wouldn't separate them. I'm not convinced her problems have anything to do with hormones and it would make them unhappy.
I'm hoping she come through. I have a female budgie, Mariah, that's health has been an issue for unknown reasons but she always pulls through.
