question about breeding budgies

So I have settled on budgies for my next birds but I'm not sure if I want to breed them or not. My question is can you breed more than one pair per cage?
Any help would be great thanks.

Budgies are colony breeders so yes you can breed multiple in a cage, just make sure the cage is big enough. When you hang nest boxes, make sure they're the same exact box and place them at the same height. The thing you must watch for is IF one of the hen wants the other hen's box, she WILL kill their eggs and chicks if she gets the chance.

Some people may not like what I have to say, but I'm going to say it anyway. There are so many birds (including budgies) in rescues needing homes, you should think long and hard about if you want to contribute to the problem. Also, aside from rescues, budgies are very common in pet stores as well. If you did have budgie babies, do you know that you would be able to find them all good homes?

No the more I think about it I just want to have all males. I know of all the birds in shelters so I don't think I am going to breed them, I just love little babies!

Part of the reason why I have all boys.....lol.....BUT I do have to say, handfed budgies is not easy to find! When they're handfed tame, super sweet babies they are. They do go wild VERY easy if not played with if you keep multiple in the same cage. As RioMom mentioned, they are a dime a dozen....

Rio Mom is so so correct. Parakeets are a dime a dozen in pet stores. Why, why would anyone want to breed more when there are so many that have no homes. RESCUE DONT BREED.

Handfed budgies are pretty hard to find, I actually have a waiting list for babies. There are a lot of people that want them. IMO, hand feds and parent raised(like what's at the pet stores) budgies aren't even comparable. I have two young pet store budgies and it's a huge PITA getting them to come out of their cage and even though I can get them to ladder(stepping up) while they are out, they always look like they are looking for an escape route and will make any attempt they can to get back to their cages. My hand fed babies are actually hard to get back in their cages, they will run up your arm, fly to your shoulder, do whatever they can if it means they can spend more cuddle time with you.

I've had multiple people come to visit and they all go nuts over my babies and always ask, "what kind of birds are these, they're awesome!" when I tell them they are regular parakeets it blows their mind! Most people don't realize how tame and friendly they can really be.

I really love breeding and there are just so many colors you can end up with breeding budgies. And there aren't any breeders of budgies anywhere near me so I think they would sell. I just don't know what I am going to do.

Maybe lineolated parakeets would be better for you. They come in all colors and tend to stay sweeter than budgies even if kept in groups. They are more expensive than budgies but most babies are handfed. I think linnies sell well too since they are more unusual in the US. I know around here they go quickly and are hard to find.

I was thinking about those but I could only find one pair, and they were $400!

If you do breed , and if you can't keep the chicks yourself , what are your plans for them ?
How many do you think you can keep ? How much room and what size cage do you have for them. Seed adds up , believe me. And so does the rest of the items you will need to supply them with. Factor all this in before you decide to breed.
And , BTW , you better have a great vacuum because they can stir up quite a mess when you have multiple keets . I talk from experience .

Oh believe me I know about mess, I have 5 gcc so...I will calculate costs and everything before I get them, that's what I did before I got my breeding pair of gcc.

Ok... I have decided to just get two males and if in the future I still want to breed, I will get a couple of females.
I have heard that budgies shouldn't be on pellets like other parrots, is this true? And if so what seed mix do you guys use for your budgies?

I'm hoping to breed a few species of birds, when I retire in a couple of years, and budgies will be one of those species...

Budgies are great birds for people with limited space, children and the elderly - I just got another one.. Here's a pic..

I love English Budgies!!! I drool over 2 of them at my local bird store. My local bird store also got in 3 hand fed budgies and my boyfriend has to drag me away from them every time we're in there.

I have 1 hand fed little guy named Spooky Burd. He's my lover boy! He says so much and just loves to hang out. He was my first hand raised bird and I LOVE him with all my heart.
He says Good boy Spooky Burd, Come here Spooky, Be a good boy, Spooky Spooky Spooky Buuuuuuurd, WAKE UP, I love you, Here kitty kitty kitty kitty, and (my favorite) pig pig pig pig pig SOOOOOIE.

I also have 1 Budgie from Petsmart and she is scared of humans. Totally scared of anything that is not Spooky. Spooky and Meister get along great and Spooky gets to visit her for a few hours every day before going back in his cage. I keep them separate for the most part. I do feel bad for her because she did have another female that was in with her, but we lost her. :'( Meister and Metzger were the best of buddies. You couldn't separate them for the world.

The three of them together with Spooky as a little guy. Metzger is the green, Meister is the blue and Spooky is the pretty little man Oh I love my Spooky.

Sorry, I kind of went off on a tangent there. What it comes down to is I wouldn't breed any budgies. I was happy with my female pair and they were happy together, but when we lost Metzger I felt bad for Meister so Spooky gets to visit. There are not happy huts or anything of the sort because I really don't want any babies. I couldn't spend the time to properly raise them to be like my Spooky. (I won't deny it... Spooky would make some pretty babies though )
