Since I SHOULD be bringing my baby home in 11 days(!!!!!), and she will be almost completely weened, what is the best way to start her at home on her big girl food? She will be right at 10 weeks old then. Now just so you know, she started on solids last week. I told my breeder I would luv to finish hand raising her at home since she will be almost completely off formula by then. I do have experience with hand feeding formula to birds since I interned at the zoo and wildlife center. My question is how to present her solid food. I plan to have very finely diced fruits and veggies and was wondering if I should mix them and her pellets (zupreem) together in the beginning so they will have some moisture to them. This is always how we presented our bird food at the zoo. I also got the bountiful harvest mix in small from mysafebirdstore.com since it came so highly recommended along with a couple of other mixes that can be cooked. Thx in advance for any advice. I am so ready!!!

Yes, you have the right idea. I also moisten the pellets when they are young. And Bountiful Harvest is great! I think you are ready! :)

Thx Echo! I have honestly never felt more prepared for any pet as much as this one. I have been ready for weeks with cage, toys, perches, travel cage, play gym, cage cover, and tons of dif food and treats, along with extra bowls. I have also read 2 conure books, and DEVOURED the net for info, lol! I still have some more bird proofing to do around my living room, but not much.

Sounds like you are set up for success :). I hate the waiting for a pet but it sure is nice to have everything in place so things go right from the start. I know what you mean about looking at an empty toy filled cage way ahead of time though, it is hard LOL.

I am excited for you and hope for lots of pictures when she is ready to come on home :)

It sounds like you have the right idea based on what I've read here from breeders. But, I have not actually ever finished the weaning process myself so I won't comment further on that:)

I do want to say I'm very excited for you! And yes, being prepared is so much better. I bought Rowdy spontaneously, although I'd been doing research for a few months and thought I wanted a conure when I did buy her. But, I ended up having to drive her to another pet store to find a cage and it's not really the way I would recommend doing things, lol!

I had Codie at 11 weeks old and still handfed her formula till she was about 16 weeks.. She was still eating other food for herself though!! For the first few weeks, I soaked all her seed and pellets for about 5 mins , by just pouring boiling water over it.. I was also given her mashed potato with mashed veggies in it... The fruit I just cut up very small ( Although she has now decided she dosent like fruit, only Veg lol) Hope this helps :D
You will know when he dosent want the formula anymore as he will just turn away from it, as Codie did in the end
