Question in buying a cockatiel

Hi guys I have a question in buying a cockateil. How do I know I've picked the right companion. This may seems a stupid question but I want to make the right decision before owning one. I have read all the info on looking after a cockatiel and their needs and toys. I had seen the right cage for him which I know it's appropriate for him. any reply is appreciated thanks

Hmm.. well my cockatiel was just given to me by a friend's friend who didn't want him anymore, and he's a great pet! I won't go into detail, but are you picking from a breeder or a pet store or a shelter etc? I would pick one that isn't scared of you, and steps up easily. They're much easier to form bonds with, as you won't have to tame them. If it's a breeder selliing hand-raised cockatiels, and they're all pretty much the same, then it won't really matter which one you get! Just get whichever you like .

The cockatiel with be hand reared and tamed I had read in an artical on the net saying that he/she will come to you. Is that right!

not exactly lorri, some birds like ppl can be shy/nervous so see bird 1st and see how it behaves around you, without owner present?

i say this as nut is forward when we're about with house guests, but if no family member about she will be very stand off-ish and i have walked in on her doing the tall skinny, were she stretches her whole body up wards and flattens all her feather means she is scared

the bonding process can be rather straining at times, but my nut came to me etc at 1st then went all psycho for lack of a better word

if the bird is a confidant one, building the bonding trust is easier, nut is a confidant bird, so building that bond with her happened at a good pace

I would definitely go and see the bird to see how the two of you connect. I always believe whether it be a bird, cat, dog, etc. that the right pet will choose his/her future owner. This is how I decided on Nicky. When the breeder opened the cage door, none of the sun conures inside wanted to come out except Nicky who flew out right to me. I knew at that moment he was the one I wanted.

I 'd pretty much say the same as "Crazy" if given the chance , see if any bird comes to you, or the tamest in he bunch.there' a surprising variety of personalities in a clutch of tiels.
