Questions on Picking Up the New Bird Buddy from DFW Airport

Does anyone on here have experience picking up an animal being shipped to DFW Airport? I have all the flight numbers and a bunch of other numbers, but this is the first time I've had to pick up a bird shipped to me like this and considering how confusing I find airports when all I have to do is get ON a plane (lol), I am a little nervous about the pickup I have scheduled for next Saturday at 3:00pm. She's coming from Georgia but, unfortunately, has a layover in Houston, so I don't want her trip to be any longer than it has to be! Any tips for the pickup?

I don't have experience with that airport in particular, but I had Shiko shipped to me. I would call the airport and confirm where the pick up for animals occurs. For me, it was actually in a place beside the airport and not actually in the building itself. Also double check if there are any time restraints for when the animal can be delivered. I could only pick up Shiko before 5 PM, afterwards he would have to stay the night at the facility.

When you do get your bird, I totally recommend just quietly chatting to them and not bombarding them as soon as you see them. Grab the carrier, take it to your car, strap the carrier in, and talk quietly to them while they face you as you drive home. When you get home, go into the room where their cage is and open up the carrier to let them explore. If they come to you, reward them with a yummy fruit that they may have been weaned onto as a high value treat, or perhaps even some nuts that they might like. Move nice and slow.

When Shiko got home, I opened up his carrier in our room and he went on an adventure every where. He settled right into his cage and ate/drank. I needed to give him a bath because his tail had poop on it from the carrier, but I waited until he was a bit more comfortable with me before trying. We bribed Shiko with bananas to come in and out of his cage onto our arms the first few days because it was what he responded best to.

It all starts with contacting the Airline that is transporting the Parrot. Contact the Airline at DFW. Each Airport handles animal differently and you need to find out what is required and where you will need to go to pick-up the Parrot and most importantly what ID and documents are needed.

Note: Other than general information, most Airlines will not talk to you in detail unless you have specific information (numbers) from the flight tickets /freight documents that the Parrot will be flight under.

Once you have the information, I strongly recommend that you complete a dry run earlier that day or the day before.

When you pick-up your Parrot, come with bottled water (smaller bottles) and dry food!!!!

Thanks so much for the tips! I will definitely give them a ring, especially since DFW is a GIANT airport and figuring out where to go in it is like wandering around a city. And I will definitely enjoy it!
