Re: Long road trip with Sheldon

Hi All,
I'm just throwing this thought around for now:22:. I'm thinking of visiting my sister in Oregon in late June when things warm up some. The drive straight through would be about 11 hours:11:. I would like to bring Sheldon. I thought I could construct a feeding tray that velcros to the dash board and suction cup a perch to the window. My daughter will be coming with me, so there will be extra help and company for Sheldon:green2:. I would bring his bird o pac and his smaller cage and his play tree.

Any thoughts. Would this not be a good idea?

Re: Long road trip with Sheldon

Sounds like a birdy road trip :) the only thing I would suggest is to take him on local trips here and there to get him used to the idea. Then go for the long trip. Birds really seem to enjoy going on drives (the ones I've had). Good luck :)

We take Buddy camping in our motorhome. Buddie and I are the passengers. We take his travel cage, but for the most he
sits on his "camping perch" or my shoulder until I decide to put him in his cage to eat or drink. I have taken Buddie on drives buckled the cage in the front seat. If he can see me he is ok.

Re: Long road trip with Sheldon

I have just recently built a custom cage for my car as i have a 15hour drive planed for my RB2 to go and see the vet.
As kalidasa said do some small trips and mointer Sheldon behaviour but it should be no problem .
I have spent the last 2 months training my too to eat in and like her new travel cage and small trips around town:)
I believe its a good skill for them to have :)

Re: Long road trip with Sheldon

When I took him to the vet a couple months ago I put his food and water with him. He seemed to eat and I think he pucked up some. Is feeding them while traveling ok, or should I wait till we have stopped for a break. I took him out of his travel pen to ride with me and he seemed to enjoy it a lot more, being able to look around. He wasnt a pest like I thought he would be.

So, if I plan on this trip to Oregon I'd like to have a vet within proximity. Can anyone on this site tell me if there is a qualified avian vet near Salem or Portland? My sister lives in Willamina which is about an hour from Salem and Portland. thanks

Lake Oswego a suburb of Portland has the only board certified avian vet in Oregon.

Dr. Lintner... I can get you her address and phone number in a PM if you want. There is also an emergency clinic that sees birds not far from the avian vet.

She is the one I take Zilla to, and I know several other members of this forum who live in Oregon take their fids to her.
