Hahns Macaw
...for a Hahns Macaw, I am thinking I need an elevated stand, this guy is active and only three years old and needs to expend a lot of energy.

I was wanting to see what others have found to be good for their Hahns Macaw.

Thanks!!

Joe

If you are good with PVC...or even if you aren't but are a crafty person...make one yourself.

I am good with PVC, but really don't have the time, but if I do, What kind of glue would I use to hold the PVC together, is the glue toxic to the birds?

The fumes from the glue ARE toxic to pretty much all living things including humans, so this is a well ventilated area, away from your birds kind of thing.

I actually didn't bother to glue mine. I just put them together tight. That way I can take the part that gets pooped on off to wash it.

I made a pvc play gym for my fids and I also did not use any glue. I've never had any problem with the pieces coming apart...they are very secure. I need to start on another bigger one (one of these days)

I didn't use glue. If the pipes started moving I put vet tape on the pipe before putting it in the fitting.

I understand not having time. Look for play stands/perches on Craigslist but know your prices before you buy. Make sure you clean it before putting your bird on it. Whatever you give to them they are going to chew it up.

If it was up to me I would have old milk crates as end tables, the electrical wire roll for a coffee table and bed sheets as drapes, but my wife has domesticated me :( and has given her input into the design of the play stand. I just found out I have a ton of grape wood in our backyard and thinking about trimming it and make a nice playstand.

But just in case thanks for the input on the PVC stuff, you guys are right, the pieces will fit together snuggly and I like the idea of being able to take it apart to clean,

Back to the wood, do you think it will be easy to clean?

Do you mean for the first time or after he's played with it and pooped all over it?

I use a steam cleaner on mine. And actually, my macaw only really poops on the base, and that is easy to clean material.

I'm in the process of making a PVC play gym for Zilla. Not using any glue, just putting vet wrap in it and sliding the pieces together and they seem pretty sturdy. Of course she isn't a big mac, but I won't take the chance of her falling and getting hurt, so I am being very careful to check and double check each piece I add to make sure it's secure enough.

A hahns is a mini-mac. About half the size of your zon. Possibly less.

Itty bitty bird. Great big attitude.

Both, but come to think about this, should I initially clean the wood before I let the little guy play on it?

I like the steam cleaner and this guy has been trained to not poop out of the cage, or least he hasn't done it so far. But the play stand/perch he will be spending a lot of time on that, but if I build it might, he should miss the limbs and poop on the bottom base.

OK, I found out the grape vines in my back yard are muscadine grapes, the vines are big but not that big, I think his feet will fit.

First, is the muscadine grape vine ok to use for a Hahns Macaw? And if they are, should I clean them off, I don't think anyone has every sprayed them with anything, they grow wild here in Western North Carolina.
