Rescued 2 birds: Amazon & Kakariki

Hello all.... I joined this forum this last week because we rescued two parrots this last Monday. The owner had Alzheimer's and wasnt able to care for them, other than the occasional food and water. The birds were her husband's, who passed away a few years ago. They were moved from the living room to a back bedroom where they were probably never let out of their cages or handled. She wasn't able to tell me anything about the birds; their species types, capabilities, ages... nothing. Her daughter-in-law (my friend) called me a week ago and said it was time to move the birds, that Winn had been moved to a relative's house 2 hours away and the birds were being temporarily cared for by a neighbor. So, this last Monday we drove an hour one-way to get the birds.

Jackie, the green cheeked/mexican red headed amazon and Sparky, the yellow-crowned parakeet/kakariki. They've both been doing really well; Jackie is up to 14 phrases and counting, various fun noises, and Sparky has a few phrases he likes to say too.

I have never owned a bird larger than a Quaker- and that was 15 years ago! So, I'm a little intimidated by Jackie's size, but he hasn't tried to bite me yet or shown any signs of aggression so I feel I can trust him already... but I'm not letting my guard down! And Sparky is just so energetic and curious it makes me want to let him out to see what he's about lol

I thank those that have already given me advice regarding these birds in my species-specific posts, and welcome any other advice, tips, do's and don'ts!!

Thank you I'm an animal lover, and these birds just fell into my lap and I couldn't say no. We have 3 large dogs, 3 birds now, and 1 huge cat. Hahha

We also have a zoo here. We found out this summer that reptiles are not allowed here. So we had to re-home our chameleon, crested geckos, and day geckos. We still have a saltwater reef tank, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. Do yourself and and the others a huge favor. Don't let the dogs or cat interact with the birds. No matter how nice they are to each other they will have bad days and those can result in high vet bills of death.

That's good to know! The dogs are mainly outside, and the cat is confined to another part of the house so right now they haven't had any interactions with each other.
