I just rescued 2 birds last week. A BB parrot named Ollie and a gorgeous cockatiel name is Simone. Last night was a terrible long night as I watched my cockatiel die almost suddenly. He was fine before I left the house, I stepped out to go to Petco and running errands I was gone maybe 2 hours and when I returned home Simone was cooped up in the corner of the cage at the bottom. He could barely walk and very lethargic I don't know what could have caused this Olly however is as happy as can be. I rushed him to an emergency vet 45 minutes from home he literally died 2 minutes before I walk through the doors. I sang to him the whole ride there I comforted him as much as I could it was heartbreaking because I was already attached. They said it could have been the transition from the rescue to my home, Simone was 5 years old I never thought I could hurt this much from the loss of a bird that I only knew for a week, but in that short time Simone had my heart. My son who is 4 years old is extremely sad as well as he grew very close to Simone these past 7 days. It is very difficult to explain to him why and answer all his questions what a difficult situation for us. I wondered if maybe he was exposed to some type of toxin but then I thought if that were the case then Ollie would be sick as well. A sad day in my home today. Fly free Simone rest in peace.

I'm very sorry for your loss of Simone. It's amazing how quickly we get attached.

I'm surprised the vet didn't suggest a necropsy, since you have another bird in your home. It's impossible to guess what happened with Simone, he could have already been ill when you adopted him. Birds hide their symptoms when they are sick, it serves them well in the wild. It might be wise to take your other bird for a thorough exam by an avian vet just to be safe.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Many of us here have experienced the loss of a beloved bird (me included) so we can absolutely understand your grief and heartache. Our birds make their way into our hearts so fast, don't they?

My thoughts are with you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss:( They do come in and steal our hearts so quickly.
Fly free, Simone, you will be missed.

My deepest condolences to you and your family for the loss of Simone.

I share Allee's thought that you might want to have Ollie checked by an avian vet just to be sure. It is quite possible that Simone was sick when you got her.

You and your family, and especially your son, will be in my thoughts and prayers.

We do get attached quite easily, and it's heartbreaking no matter how long of a time they've been with us. I am so sorry that Simone went so unexpectedly, and without a concrete answer as to why. I'm glad to hear Ollie is doing well. Condolences to you and your family :(.

Thank u all for your kind words, a necropsy was an option I haven't decided as my funds are pretty limited. They also said they won't be able to tell if it was due to exposure to toxins with a necropsy. I researched for hrs last night and found something interesting, cockatiels commonly have night fights and can be stared easily which can cause an injury from falling from their perch or even affect their heart and can cause a death similar to Simone s. I wonder if my chihuahua barked and startled Simone since I got home very close to their bedtime. My chi has had a hard time accepting my new babies although he is adapting he does still bark at them every so often. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. I will call the vet and make an appt for Ollie. Thank u all for support and kind words xoxo

I feel so sorry for you and your family. I also think you should take Ollie to the vet. Also to make sure, santize everything that belonged to Simone e.g cage, toys, bowls, and playstand(s). I would also sanatize Ollie's things just to make sure. I may sound paranoid but I rather be safe than sorry.

I'm so sorry for your loss!

I'm so sorry for your loss of Simone. A loss so quickly can be heightened by grieving the absence of expected memories.

I hope Ollie continues to do well.

I can understand your hesitance with doing the necropsy if your funds are limited. They can be prohibitively expensive. But since you sound like you're still on the fence about it, I just want to make sure you know that there is a limited window of time during which a necropsy is effective and even worth doing. And while I don't remember the exact number of hours you have, (72 hours, maybe? Give or take another 20) I do know that, even assuming refrigeration, you must be approaching it by now.

Basically, the more time that passes, the less that your vet will be able to determine via a necropsy.

I would suggest, though, that even if you do not get a necropsy you should approach the situation as though Simone did have something potentially contagious. Specifically, you should try to sanitize everything with which she came in contact. That way, on the off-chance that she was sick and Ollie had not caught it, you might minimize the chances of transmission. Fecal matter, urates and feather dust can all serve as potential carriers of disease, so better to be sure.

Again, I'm so very sorry for your loss. And I know thinking about all of this stuff while you're grieving is decidedly less than pleasant. (I was faced with both the necropsy decision and having to sanitize a cage and every play-stand earlier this year.)

Thank u all. I did order the necropsy, fingers crossed I get some answers :(
