Rosie the Green Winged Macaw
I spent almost the entire day out today, having lunch and shopping with a friend. It was a really nice, relaxing day, for me. Rosie was in her cage and the cleaning ladies came so I am guessing not so relaxing for her.

Anyway, I don't usually wear my jewelry anymore unless I am going out due to the annoyance factor of keeping Rosie off it. Today I put on my wedding rings and a necklace and was wearing them when I walked in the door with my daughter (I picked her up from school).

As soon as we got to the door, Rosie started screaming, demanding that I let her out immediately. I brought her to her tree, she went potty and then asked to cuddle. I was holding her and Ashie came over to chat about Halloween costumes. Well, I guess that sent Miss Rosie over the edge. She was not going to be ignored any longer today. So, she very slowly clamped down on my engagement ring and applied pressure. Of course, I didn't notice as I was chatting until the ring was digging into my hand. I moved my hand from Rosie's beak and diamonds went flying and then I noticed my hand.

I then noticed I was losing feeling in my finger and called for Jef (it's times like this that I am so glad he works from a home office). He came down, panicked and got bolt cutters. Then looked at me as if I was an insane person and asked my why in the world Rosie hanging and swinging off my ponytail like a crazed monkey when I had a hurt hand. So I put Miss I Am Going To Make You Pay For Ignoring Me back on her tree. 5 minutes, a pair of bolt cutters, some pliers, scissors and some muttering from Jef later, the ring was off.

Needless to say, my husband is not happy with Rosie. He told my daughter when he put that ring on my finger 14 years ago he never pictured this. I heard him saying Stupid Bird as he headed back to his office. I guess I will have to hope we can salvage it, fortunately my wedding band is in tact.

So for anyone that questions the strength of the slow clamp of a macaw, here you go. Funny enough, it didn't even hurt until my ring started cutting into my skin. I am so used to having my fingers in her beak all the time. Plus, she wasn't trying to hurt me, just annoy me by doing something she knows she is not allowed to do. Sigh....

Euuww! Your poor finger! Barney and Madge used to go for my rings and, stupidly, I would let them. After a couple of scary 'lemme go!' incidents, I stopped allowing it out of fear for my fingers. Barney and Madge have big beaks, but they could *never* do that to a ring! How on earth do you persuade a Macaw to let go???

Thanks. I actually just pulled my hand away. She has never not let go when I take my hand from her. She was being a nudge, but wasn't trying to hurt me. She did it sneakily, I didn't even realize what she was doing until I got uncomfortable.

Here is a pic of my finger before we got the ring off.

Eeeyowwch! That looks seriously challenging! *I* think Rosie just wants a diamond for herself. You should get one implanted in her beak (the way some people get them in their teeth). I wonder if a bird could wear a ring on its toe? Or... no! Of course! A diamond-set leg ring! That's the ticket! Rosie could flash her leg every time anyone came to visit. You should start teaching her to sing 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' right away. :D :D :D

LOL! I can picture it now!!!

Thank you for the giggle!

Wow..that goes to show the power of the beak for sure. I am glad you were able to get the ring off and not suffer badly for it.

I had a silver band that had a special saying on it that Valentino crushed into my finger. Lupe had to use plies to re squish the ring so I could get it off. Unfortunately it was ruined beyond repair. It took a few days for me to forgive Valentino as that ring meant a lot to me. Since then Valentino has never messed with my rings.

I wonder if the giant beak can crush my platinum ring? It is a pretty dense ring that after all these years still held it shape. There is no wear on it (except needs to be shined up) even the prongs have no wear on them. Now that is a metal that does not wear down over the years like gold can.

Maybe we all need Platinum rings to wear around our parrots. I am glad your Rosie didn't "eat" a diamond. I would be just frantic wondering if the jewel would cut up Valentino's insides.

That's a good point. Platinum may be the way to go!

I am not upset with her, since I know it is her nature to be mischievous. I dropped the ball, wearing my rings and then not paying attention.

I would be worried if she had injested a diamond as well. Although I think that would have sent my husband right over the edge and not from worrying about Rosie!!

Oh my , is your finger still swollen? Can you get the band off? I think your ring may be history...

No, my finger is fine. I took the band off right away, since my husband was worried my finger would swell further.

Betrisher - we call Bundii's leg band her pandora bracelet. Someways I swear she is jus looking at it going that is so pretty. :)

  Holy smokes, Kendra!

I'm SO sorry about your ring! I think it can be fixed. Were you able to find all the diamonds she managed to remove? :11:

YEARS ago, when I was still wearing my engagement ring, Hunter pried the rock out of it, but she left the actual band in tact. It took me 3 days to find it. I was PETRIFIED she had swallowed it, so when I finally found it, I shed some tears out of sheer relief.

Thanks Wendy!

Yes, I did find the diamonds since noticing them flying was what tipped me off to what happened. I think she crushed one of the small side ones that is still in the ring. :o. But really, I think I will probably just have it reset for my Xmas gift. :)

So happy she didn't swallow any. I can't imagine how nervous you must have been!!!

Bundiibird - Rosie's vet removed her band since he felt it could cause her harm. So maybe that was the problem? She wanted a pretty piece of jewelry like a pandora for herself? ;)

Holy moses, those big beaks are scary! I never wear jewelry at home, Fiji pounces on it the first chance she gets. Sundance could care less, obviously because he is a BOY, and Fiji is a girl who likes the bling. :53:

BTW, your ring is gorgeous! No wonder Rosie couldn't resist it!

Wow, I am so glad you're okay! What a gorgeous ring, I hope it can be repaired!

This is one of my biggest fears when I add a parrot! I have three lower earrings in each lobe, plus a tragus and a cartilage piercing in one ear and a snug piercing in the other. The lobe earrings come out every day when I get home from work but I almost never change or remove the other three. And my wedding band and engagement ring never come off.

Guess I'll be rethinking things when we add a feathered one to the household!

Wow, sorry about your ring, but thanks for sharing the story. Skittles puts my ring in her mouth all the time and a few times, I thought to myself that if she wanted to, she could put my finger in a world of hurt. I never imagine that she could bend the ring like that though.

I am glad your OK, and hope you can get the ring fixed.

Oh my goodness!! Glad you're ok and the damage was limited!

Thank you! It's all good. Once I get the stone reset I will definitely remember to take it off when handling Miss Thing. :)

I'm not sure who my husband would want to kill first me or the bird. Lol. I would feel like you and think it was my own fault, my husband not so much. Glad you weren't hurt.
