Monday Ruby had an accident. Her clip has grown out and she is flighted at the moment as my AVet is out of commission due to surgery. I believe it is time to trust the Hubby to perform the clip as he has studied on it alot. So anyway she was atop her cage and decided she wanted to go outside and she flew straight into our glass front door- BAM. Usually this door isn't visible as we keep the big door closed. My son witnessed the event, She walked into the kitchen to me and stepped up as usual. I placed her on the counter to check her out and she let out the oddest sound ever and puffed up and crouched down. As I was cooking dinner I immediately took her upstairs to my bed for fresh air and quiet. By the time I got her to my bed her left foot was curled tightly up and she was listing to the left side. She was unstable and falling to the left side on the bed. I called the Vet and she told me to bring her to her house ASAP. She got off her sick bed and gave Ruby a steroid shot to control any swelling of the brain that might occur. Ruby had recovered by the time we had reached the vets home ( 20 minutes away ) but the shot was just for safety's sake. Ruby has been fine ever since, so we really dodged a tragedy. I have since placed a stick on stained glass cover on that door to prevent this ever happening again, and all other windows have blinds. It was quite frightening and my nerves were shot for days afterward.

Oh my goodness.....I'm glad things were okay though!!!! I have curtains on all my windows so the birds wouldn't fly into them since I keep my birds flighted. Just be sure there's no blood feathers when you clip, that's all you have to watch for really. Clipping isn't that complicated as long as you get a sharp scissors that will cut through without issues, I keep a pair just for the purpose cause when you cut other stuffs with them, they'll dull out. I basically just cut the primary flight feathers at the line with the secondary feathers and I leave the secondary feathers towards the body alone. So basically half way cut. It's the way I learned how to cut for the past 16 years so I can tell you it's a very simple process! Good Luck!

Wow, what a scary experience!!! Glad your baby is ok though :)

We were scared to death ! I saw her fly into the door and I called mom, but Ruby walked to the kitchen fine. When mom got her to her room she was quiet and seemed to be not breathing or responding at all. Mom gently rubbed her chest and spoke softly to her and she started breathing then a few minutes later she began to respond and try to walk on the bed. She was falling to the side though. Mom gently held her to her chest and Dad drove us to the Vets house. By the time we got there she seemed her old self. We slept in the den by her cage all night to make sure she didnt have any problems in the night. The next day we gave her her Christmas present toy we made her as a treat for recovering and staying with us. I cried and prayed all the way to the vet. I said our house is the church of birds now, cause the stained glass covering on the door looks like church windows.

Oh my goodness
Too scary, glad everything is Ok now!!

It sounds like you handled it brilliantly and I am so happy she is ok. Your post also reminds me of a couple windows I need to cover so thank you for those great ideas.

So happy all is okay, it must have been so frightening
You handled it perfectly, well done

I am glad Ruby is ok....

You have a great vet! You should let people in your area know about them. A lot of people here have had a hard time finding a vet when they have emergencies. Im so glad yours was willing to see you even though she wasnt well. Thats the way it should be!
