Since I'm new to the forum I thought Id share my story about how rude people can be when they don't understand bird people

After my very first bird died I was devistated. I honestly didn't know how my life could go on without him ( I knows I sound crazy). Anyway when I came to school and broke the news to my friends they truely felt my sorrow. However a girl sitting near us over heard and asked what was wrong. I explained to her that my beloved parrot had died (this is the bad part) After I explained the tradgedy she started to laugh hierarchically. I looked at her in disbelief and she exclaimed through her laughter "why the heck would you keep a bird you weirdo?" :(

That's so inconsiderate! Sorry you had to go through that, nobody should make fun of you for experiencing a death. Non bird people just don't get it.

Are you in high school ? If you are it can get pretty rough . Though luckily nobody judged me yet, in fact the are asking for advice and information. So sorry, why say that when your bird died ? I am the kind of person who doesnt stay quiet and ignore . I actually shoot something back , then back and forth until a full scale verbal fight. But then I usually win :P

People don't understand the bond that can be formed with a bird unless they have felt it. As a teenager myself of my friends that come over to my house look at me odd until I explain and maybe put one of my gentle birds on them. I'm very sorry about what has happened and do not let it get to you. Many many people understand what you have gone through and make sure you understand that because there is nothing wrong with what you feel. Your a great person for being so sympathetic towards an animal and feeling sorrow for the death:)

sounds like a non-animal lover period, they have no clue and probably never will. Instead of taking offense (yes, I know it's hard) feel sorry for them, because they'll never know the joy, love and dedication that an animal can provide. I can't remember not having an animal of one kind or another in my teen and adult life, they have always been a requirement for me.

That sucks that that girl was so rude, I'm a teacher (don't judge me!) and I can say from what I see at school that a lot of kids, of any age, are just rude when it comes to other peoples' feelings and so self-absorbed that they can't understand things outside their own world and it's sad. Sorry you had to experience this =(

First, I am sorry for your loss. Pets absolutely become part of the family, and their death can be very devastating. I think anyone who's ever had a animal (regardless of what kind) and had that animal love them back knows the place your in right now, and can sympathize.

I do agree with Wharf Rat that this girl has probably never experienced the love of an animal, or is just one those heartless people who views animals as nothing more than disposable play things. Instead of letting her ignorant comment affect you, try and feel sympathy for the poor girl for the kind of bond she had obviously never experienced herself. When my much loved bearded dragon died (she was very old, and had a tumor), I was pretty much inconsolable. True she was a lizard and had a pea for a brain, but she was my buddy for a lot of years, and I do feel we shared a special bond. A few inconsiderate people made rude comments along the lines of "how can you be sad a lizard died and they are gross anyways". I felt sad for them they had obviously never experienced that animal-human bond.

I'm so sorry that happened :( I have one friend who complains how I always play it by the book with birds(I actually have my own way of doing things and think I am already very lax) and says I need to relax. I buy my birds the best pellets, I make give them fresh veggies, home made chop mix, and various bird foods I make on occasion. I keep their cages clean, always make sure they are entertained, and get/make them new toys. I think of them as companions, while to her they are just animals. She cares about them and would be sad if they died because their her pet, while I would loose a close friend.
