Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
Yesterday, we noticed that Salty wasn't very active, and then in his training session, he was very reluctant to use his beak for any of the tricks that use his beak. Today he is fluffy and not really playing. He did eat some pellets and 1/2 walnut for breakfast/

Can parrots bite their own tounges?
:(
He had bannana for lunch, and tonight he gets some mashed yams/
If he's not better tomorrow, he goes to see Dr Herft.

They must Al! Look what happened with Amy. At least there is no blood with Salts, right??

Jim

No,no blood, that we can see Jim. He just is reluctant to use his beak, like in climbing around.

Thinking of Salty and all of you. Keep us posted!

The Rb bit his tongue once, and I witnessed it. He was having a battle royale with one of his foot toys, and I was enjoying the spectacle, so I was looking right at him. All of a sudden he cried out (a very different sound from the battle shrieks) and dropped the toy. Then he started fondling his tongue with his foot. I could see a pinkish spot on the otherwise usually black tongue. He was very inactive and clearly favoring his beak/tongue and was pretty unhappy for about 48 hours. We went to his doctor at about hour 12 and we were told that yes, he had bitten his tongue. So if that's any comfort...

Hoping it is nothing serious, keeping him in my prayers. 🙏🏻

Sounds like he popped, snapped or overextended his beak, most likely the upper bill. Although they do not have an extensive nerve mass along the root of the bill, there are enough that had he done any of those things he is likely in pain and/or it is painful when he uses/moves his bill.

Back off on those things that require him to apply pressure with his bill.

Yup, if no improvements, it warrants a the very least a discussion with his Avian Professional.
Hoping you feel better in the morning Salty...

Yep they can bite their own tounges, or hurt beak, Baby done it before as she had wood splinter stuck in the side of her tounge, was not fun removing it. Hopefully nothing to serious and he will be back to normal in a few hours.

'Boats that exactly what it seems like- hyperextened his beak muscle. He has eaten well tonight on soft yams, and a bit of Avicake, and did a few non-beak involved tricks. And he got a major head scratching , with him really leanin into my fingers, earlier in the evening. Weighed him just before nite nite, he is within 2 grams of his usual weight. He just is hesitant to use his beak. I will call his Dr in the AM to discuss if there is anything she can suggest besides trying to rest it from too much use.

We are just trying to not freak out totally, Geri and I, he is so big a part of our family.

I’ll keep you and Salty close in my thoughts until you tell us all he’s fine. [emoji3590]

Poor Salty! It's such a helpless feeling when they can't tell us exactly what is going on! The fact that he is alert and up to playing (even though no beak involved games) is an excellent sign. Combine those promising signs with his stable food intake and weight and I would feel pretty safe saying he is stable for the night and is indeed suffering from an oral injury or a muscular injury. You might just want to visually confirm adequate fluid intake as well, if you haven't already done so. I would think if they are eating heartily then fluid intake would be adequate but you can never be too careful.

Yesterday I noticed Sass was favoring her left foot. Upon closer inspection I observed what I think to be a small cut on the very front soft protuberance of her forward facing big toe. The only think I could think of was perhaps she was gripping a walnut (in the shell) and her toe got cut in a crack in the shell? Regardless, she is feeling much better this evening and in all likelihood so will Salty! Oh, and if Salty is used to eating medium or large pellets as a staple, you may want to crunch them up into smaller bites so it doesn't take as much beak strength to eat them. Please provide an update in the morning!

5 PM appointment with Dr H, today. Keeping fingers crossed.

They can in fact bite their tongues! I saw Kiwi do it once, while excitedly playing with a toy. He let out the biggest screech/hurt noise (I can empathize, I’ve bitten my tongue before and wanted to scream/cry too:(). I don’t recall him having any further issues past the initial freak out of giving his tongue a chomp though. A sore tongue/beak with no sign of blood or injury would not necessarily be my first thought if Kiwi was being extra subdued and not eating normally. Probably best to get Salty to the vet for a more detailed examination.

Oh no! Poor Salty! I'm sending all my love and prayers hoping he feels better soon. It's such a horrible feeling to see our sweet fids in pain!

Good luck Salty! I've been silently following and I hope he feels better soon too.

SO it seems Salty had a horizontal split or crack at the tip of his upper beak, Dr H showed it to me before she did the oh so tiny trim of it. That was consistent with all the symptoms he was showing. She said it was def NOT a hyper extended upper beak ( and thank GOd, cuz she said thats really painful and hard to put back into place). She put a bit of xylocain on the tip, and gave him a shot of pain med,to last 24 hrs. He seems better and was talking and singing in the car ride back.

I was so worried, thanks PF family for your support!! You guys da best!

Attaboy Salty! You rest up and take it easy for a little bit, so glad he’s ok!

Oh I’m so relieved. I know you are too. [emoji3590]

Thanks for updating us. So glad it wasn't a major issue. It's so nice that pain meds are available now for birdies , I'm old enough to rember when they weren't, ....
