Hi everyone! Yesterday I took in an 11 month old Quaker parrot, Sammy. The family who owned him was moving into an apartment that only allowed three birds and they decided to take their budgies. I have had budgies in the past, but Sammy is my first mid-size bird. Right now he is living in the cage they were keeping him in, which is a little too small for him, but I am planning to wait until he settles into his new home a little bit before I move him into a brand new larger cage--his old cage is sort of his "safe place" right now and I want him to be comfortable!
He seems to be doing really well in his new home. He doesn't want to step up off his cage every time I ask (though he has no problem stepping up if he's in his cage and I reach in--he's not cage aggressive at all, thankfully!), but now and then he'll come and sit with me. They said he could say "what's up" and "bye bye" when I took him, and he has tried to say these things to me when he's in the mood (aka, when he's been vocalizing in other ways and I ask). I got him a ton of new toys and man does he love his little mirror, lol. Stares at himself all the time! Who IS that handsome bird in there?!
He was living off only seeds when I got him (and in a really dirty cage, yuck, they aren't that hard to clean, people) , so right now I have both seeds and pellets in his cage and will be trying to switch him over to pellets when he settles in.
I am the first to admit that I don't know a ton about parrots, but that is why I am here on this forum--to learn! I have been looking to get a parrot for awhile, and was thinking I'd get a baby green cheeked conure in a couple of months from the Kookaburra shop in Dallas, but when Sammy was just down the street and needed a home, I decided to give him one. I am very excited to have him as a part of my family!
One thing I am wondering... I am a teacher and am off this next week for Spring Break. Should I try and give him the same amount of attention that he will regularly be getting from me (when I am working?) so that he won't be upset when I start work again?
Terrible picture of him preening my VERY just got out of bed hair, LOL.
