Sand perches?

Hello 👋 I have a 2 year old male cockatiel named Kiko.

I have a friend who cuts Kiko’s nails for me because I am way too afraid of hurting him and she’s dealt with birds her whole life. She’s very gentle and quick with it but I don’t like bothering her to come over and cut his nails. She doesn’t mind helping but she suggested getting one of those sanding perches so he can file his nails on his own.

are these types of perches any good? He will certainly ingest the sand that rubs off and I don’t know if that’s safe. If they are safe or a good way to keep his nails filed, is there a specific brand that sells good ones?

SOme folks like them, I had one but based on what I learned, I removed mine. They are very hard on the bottom of the parrots feet, especially if its the sleeping perch. Makes the soles of the feet very tender and in some cases can even cause a sore. There are sand perches and even ones made from cement, which are REALLY rough.

I use this one by Superoost. It has a smooth top where the soft pad of the foot would hit and only the sides, where the nails have contact, are rough. I have the x-small for my budgies and the small for my Quaker parrot. Personally have never had any issues from the perch and it really does seem to help keep their nails shorter.

I would not recommend it! I tried it and IT RUINED MY BIRD'S FEET! up to this day, she still has scars...😭

NEVER use sand perches!! It tears up the bottom of their feet. We are trying to get pet shops to stop selling them. Branches with bark on them is the best perch. Make sure you give your bird smooth perches as well. And a cloth rope perch is good for them to sleep on. Get a copy of "Birds for Dummies", by Dr Brian Speer. It's the Bible for bird owners.
I am a Certified Avian Specialist and have learned how to care for my birds from Dr. Speer personally.
