Senegal parrot exhibits angry behaviour

Hi all,

I am recently a Senegal owner dad and it’s my first pet ever. I got my 1 year old Senegal from a pet store and he was the sweetest parrot ever, even the first days when he got home he only exhibited signs of happiness, calmness, he showed to be smart and learn all the new tricks. Recently, he started having a very strange behaviour, only reaching for the stick in places easily accessible for him otherwise he would start screaming, when I leaving the room he shouts uncontrollably, I try to ignore this behaviour but it’s driving me insane. Today he started throwing all of his food on the floor to get my attention. Don’t know what is wrong, he gets enough sleep, food, water and stimulation as every day we try new things. Please help

Hi! So they do need a lot of sleep 12-14 so it could be that also make sure he’s on a healthy balanced diet (Roudybush and Tops are a good brands) and that he’s getting fresh food from time to time. Seeds and nuts should only be used as treats. If you have all that down just ignore him when he screams and give attention as soon as he stop even for a minute. He could be a little hormonal too, something to consider. Hope this helps

I have had Senegals I I have bread many babies Goes to do tend to get a little bit screaming yes it could be what you’re feeding. I feed my birds micro greens. I do my own seeds to sprout lentils and lots more. I give fruit. I give vegetables on a night I give 2 tablespoons of seeds. I take my food outon a night and this is the best time in the morning to train your parrot especially the food that he loves they like to be out and about giving plenty of toys to chew twigs from the willow tree. Many things to keep him content give that a try I hope it works.

Poicephalus parrots can be very moody and very territorial.
We have a Ruppell's Parrot and during the spring/summer he can get very possessive of my wife and will attack me. He does this mainly by flying and landing my head and then pecking at my head and pulling my hair.

He is also very territorial and if I try and go into the bathroom he runs at me and jumps on my foot biting and attacking. He is a small bird at around 6 inches so he isn't really hurting me. The rest of the year though he is pretty cool and not this aggressive.

It’s nothing you’re doing wrong, and nothing is wrong with your bird. Honesty it’s a pretty advanced animal for a first pet, but that’s fine -you’re here! This is the best place for advice and to guide you in the right direction.

Poicephalus parrots are just known for being feisty. Especially when hormonal (as well as other times ). I have two mature males. Red Bellied and Ruppell’s. Males can be hard to handle. My Red Bellied is 30 years old. It literally took him until he was about 20 for his hormones to die down. Now he’s even keel all the time and is the sweetest. But that’s not to say he wasn’t enjoyable the first 20 years lol! Over the decades I’ve has birds large and small, and Robin has always been my absolute heart bird, as I’m sure this little guy can be for you.
