Senegal vs. conure

What's the difference between the two birds besides color? as they seem to compare quite similarily in price.

According to all the reading I have done, the Senegal is quieter than the conure. Forum members may have other opinions.

Really depends on what species of conure you are talking about. Most conures will be notably louder than a senegal, but some quiter.

Conures are such a diverse group it really isn't all that meaningful to try to do such a comparison. Is there a particular conure species you had in mind?

Hey - I'm interested in this thread as I am narrowing my choices to a mid sized parrot down myself. My short list is Green cheek conure, Pionus and Senegal. Anyone can chime in with their thoughts on comparisons between them. I am drawn to their size, their moderate temperament (at least from what I'm reading) and their noise levels (or lack of). Thanks in advance for your input!

If you are considering a poicephallus parrot, you might consider the Jardine. I have a Jardine and he's wonderful and very social. From what I've read the Jardine has a more mello temperment than some of their cousins. I've been with little Ollie since he was a little chick at the breeder--he's a wonderful mid sized bird. So far Ollie isn't a cuddly bird, but that might change as he gets older. He's only 5 months old right now and is what I consider to be a parrot toddler.

We also have a Green Cheeked Conure. Her name is Connie. Her personality is definately different than Ollie's. She is considered to be one of the quiet conures, but she can really go on a jag sometimes and is much more vocal than Ollie. She is also more affectionate and loves to be held and have her neck and head scratched. She is also a little acrobat and hangs upside down in her cage. Green Cheeks can be a little nippy though--Ollie is less nippy. The only thing I worry about Connie is that she is very small and frail. She likes to crawl under things. I have to keep a close eye on her when she is out the cage to make sure she doesn't put herself in harms way.

Ollie, on the other side, is hard to miss--he larger and a stocker parrot. Though I love Connie dearly, if I had it to do over again I think I would select a mid-sized conure, like a Gold Capped or Moon Conure. Connie can't play with Ollie as she is so small and he's got a huge beak. One time he lunged at her while I was standing at her cage with him on my arm. I can't let the two out on the same play stand--if I could it would be easier--but even if we had a bigger conure there would be no guarantee that the two birds would be pals.

Thanks for the valuable input on your jardine vs. your green cheek! See? A Jardine wasn't even on my radar because I hadn't heard much about them. I do like the stockier builds (they just look sturdier). Years ago I had a blue crown conure and they can make some noise. Perhaps I will head over and research the other pois. Thanks again.

Most noticeable difference is likely to be noise. I don't know much about senegals, but my conure I've had since he was a baby is super cuddly. I can hold him upside down like a baby and rub his tummy. He loves head scratches and will stand there and let me work on his pin feathers for hours. He's a very hands on bird. All I have to say is wing and he will present his wing and such.BTW all though he is cuddly he is only like this with me and will tolerate just 1 or 2 more people. Super smart but Super LOUD. LOUD enough to make you want to pull your hair out sometimes.

My Jardine makes very melodic whistling calls that sound like "Wee, wee, wee, wee." Unfortunately it now seems that he's imitating the conure and has been letting out some high pitched whistles. Even so, his volume level is not as high as the little green cheek.

I have a Greencheek named Cracker and I think he is a super little bird. He knows his name and will come to me when I call him. He loves to have the top of his head scritched in the opposite direction of his feathers. When I am home Cracker loves to be around me. I do not need to give him my undivided attention. Most of the time he is content just to quietly perch on my arm while I surf the net or play computer games. I have not had a problem with noise from Cracker. I live in a one bedroom apartment and I doubt my nieghbors would even know I had a bird if they did not see me taking him to the Vet.
Cracker is by no means a perfect parrot. He is not a parrot that spares the beak. He does have some days that he can be very nippy. Even on his goods days I have been given a good chomp by him. It has been very dificult for me to accept this behavior and I am still struggling to curtail his beaky behavior.

Thanks for that link. It was super helpful. About three or four days ago I did take Cracker to the vet. There was nothing wrong with him. I just wanted to get his claws trimmed. I asked him (the vet) about Cracker's biting behavior. He told me Greencheeks are especially bossy little birds and he was attempting to train me with his beak. He suggested that I no longer allow Cracker on my shoulder because that makes him think he is in charge. So I have declared my shoulder off limits to Cracker. Needless to say this did not make Cracker a happy camper and he was not shy about letting me know his feelings. Anyways, I have been bitten less frequently, so I think I am making a little progress. Thanks again for your support and sharing your knowledge about birds with me. I really appreciate it.

There are many different kinds of Conures. Green cheeks are smaller than a sennie, and blue crowned conures are larger. I have owned both and they are both fantatic species of birds. But lets just say that you were thining of a green cheeked conure, there is much difference. Size, behavior, colour, and other things. Look at this site below, it has info on conures and senie's.

Has any one owned both a senegal and a green cheek conure to help me make a wise choice of which one to purchase. I can not go real expensive and both are about in the same price range. I am a little worried about the noise level but have read that a green cheek is not so loud and that the senegal is not loud at all. ( of course all birds make noise. ) HELP!

I have a Green Cheeked Conure and a Jardine (in the same family as a Senegal). Green Cheeks are known for their nippiness. I call my Connie, my little princess, and she likes to try to be imperious. Everything needs to be on her terms. Sometimes she will step right up when I ask, other times she needs to wander around the top of her cage until she does her little head bobbing thing and lets me know she wants to be picked up. Ollie, the Jardine, I'm sure has many character traits similar to the Senegal since they are both Pois. Ollie can be beaky too, he is very rambunctous and tries to circumvent me keeping him off my shoulder. So far I've found the Green Cheek is noiser than Ollie, and also that she is more cuddly. But Ollie isn't yet a year old, Jardines are said to be more affectionate after they pass the 1 year mark. I don't know about the Senegal other than what I have read; but I think Green Cheek Conures--though nippy--are a little more affectionate. I think the noise level acceptable for an apartment, I live in a town home.

Thanks Tomsde. The one I am looking at is a pineapple conure(greencheek) very cuddly at this point...12wks old, but some one said that I should get a Senegal instead. I will say the senegals are hard to find. I want a loveable little buddy as I am going thru empty nest syndrome right now. My cage is 20 x 20 x 26. Whats your opion?

I really like my GCC, I've even considered getting a 2nd one. Even though she is nippy at time, Connie is very sweet. Since your cage is 20 x 20 x 26, and the bird is smaller than a Senegal it probably would be happier in it than a Senegal would be. I've not known any Senegals personally, but since they are related to the Jardine, I think they have similar personality traits. From what I have seen and experienced, I think conures are more affectionate in general than some other types of parrots. The GCC is the quietest conure as well. If you met the baby bird and it takes to you I'd go with it if you like it.

Thanks for your helpl. Just was on the phone and a friend is offering me an Indian Ringneck baby, green. Are those sweet birds or not? I know they talk but do not know much about temperment...does any one out there know about this type of bird?

There is a lot of info on the web about them, I've not experience with them--I'd advise you research carefully--perhaps ask on the Indian Ringneck Forum. I was tempted to buy one of these little darlings myself, they have the reputation of being great talkers, but I believe they are a bit on the high maintanance side.
