- Lucky, Quaker, abt 18/male?
Previous birds: 2 Quakers, 2 budgies, Nanday conure, Indian ringneck, 2 tiels, Red Lory, 300+ finches.
I have 2 older quakers, female and male, who get along a little too well.
Percy is overweight and her beak is constantly overgrown, and I think the major cause is that she usually begs food from Lucky instead of eating her own (well, she gobbles veggies and smoothies though).
They are really bonded and play house - pretend nest-building at the bottom of their cage, mate-guarding, and the gakking - Lucky barfing up food for Percy. I've tried everything I can think of to get Percy chewing on stuff to wear her beak down, and set up all kinds of exercise opportunities to help her lose weight, but she's just a big lazy gal.
I'm wondering if it would help to get a side-by-side cage for them, or if that is just too mean. They've been together for 2 years, when we adopted Percy, so it's not like they bonded at birth, but they are like glue now.
ETA: Also wondering if I go to a divided cage, what about their sleep cage? Right now they share a, 18" square sleep cage, one sleeps on a perch, the other in a happy hut. Or maybe I'll try going back to having them sleep in their main cages. When we were up all night potty training a puppy it really disturbed them, which is why we started with the sleep cage. Now things are quiet all night.
