Hi all. I'm new to this and trying to get a message out in the hope of some useful advice. I have a sick 10 month old caiqu who is currently in vet care but we are unsure what is wrong. She recently had a very large rectal bleed, quite red and uncoagulated. The most recent addition to her cage was a manu mineral perch and I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced a problem with these or other type mineral blocks? Heavy mtal poisonining is unlikely but we have started treatment for this in case. Does anyone have any useful thoughts please??

Do you have any photos available of her cage and all the contents within??? How long have you guys had her??? What is her diet? IF you think it's the mineral perch, rid it for now.

Is it possible she ate something red??????? Certain foods can make the color of the droppings change.

Short of that... my thoughts go to papillomas/herpes virus.... but I'd rather believe it's just a food thing. Is she acting sick? Change in behavior? How's her droppings?

Hi Guys. Thanks for your responses. I have no news as yet this morning on her progress but will advise. There is no doubt that the fluid is blood and not due to something red she ate. I have had her for 6 months and other then the manu mineral perch her cage is relatively unchanged. No photos sorry but it is powder coated and I bought it brand new with her. There is no evidence of flaking paint etc. Her droppings since the major bleed contain small spots of uncoagulated blood - periodically. Her behaviour has improved slightly but my primary concern is that we are treating her for all sorts of things but no real clue as to what it actually is. Her diet is full of fresh fruit and veges, seed - only the good stuff. I also have 2 x eclectus, B&G macaw and breed parakeets. All others are fighting fit. I'll look into the virus thing thanks - I havent heard of that before. Cheers to all!
