Hi all,
I just registered on this site today because I feel a bit desperate and need to know what else I can do for my sick lovebird, Avi.
He's around 5 years old and my only pet, I am his "mate". Three days ago, all of a sudden, he started limping, holding his left foot up. He didn't hit anything in the house or fall down (at least not that I witnessed, he's an excellent flyer), and I also didn't do anything out of the ordinary with him (as in, squeezing him extra tight in my hand or something).
The next morning I took him to the vet. They did two x-rays, and told me that the leg/foot is not broken, but that his internal organs (more specifically, kidneys and testicles) are imflamated. They also did a poop sample and saw more bacteria than usual, hence they assumed it's a bacterial infection. Because the bill was already over $200, I stopped them there, since they wanted to do a blood test too...
They gave me antibiotics and painkillers, as well as bird formula. It's now day 3 and Avi is getting worse by the hour... He is not eating at all (yesterday he ate a bit of millet, today nothing at all, also not drinking any water), so now I am force- feeding him with a syringe (the bird foruma + antibiotic), which is just terrible... I am doing my best to make it as painless as I can for him, but it's still a horrible procedure to do... He is now afraid of me, doesn't come to me or let me hold him anymore (whereas before he would always be on my shoulder or let me hold him).
He looks very weak, has lost weight, although still flying a bit. In his cage he doesn't perch, but hangs off the side of the cage, holdin gon the metal bars with his beak and his right foot.
At this rate, I don't see him surviving the next few days. Has anyone ever experienced this with their birds, this seemingly sudden leg paralysis and bacterial infection? Even if the antibiotic works, can a bird go back to normal eating (millet etc.), after being force-fed through a syringe?
Any ideas, advice is welcome... I will not go back to the vet though, cannot afford these huge costs
