Skin question

My 7 week old blue/gold macaw is doing something new. I noticed his white cheeks are flaking a bit. As if it was dry or dead skin falling off. Is this normal?

I have had my blue and gold macaw for some time now, and he has never had his white cheeks flaking or dry before!


I am not sure if that is something the very young babies do?

Can you post a picture?

I will try. I think I am just going to bring him by an avian vet again. Man, can't wait for this little guy to be fully weened. He has been to the vet so many times now. Lol

Haha going to the avian vet is always the best idea!

It could be normal for a youngster, i am not sure! I only got Fargo when he was 7 months old, but his white cheeks have always stayed the same!



Hopefully he is all good!

Wow, glad I got my baby to a vet. His skin flaking ended up being a sign of crop stasis and dehydration. They are hospitalizing my bird tonight. They said he has a small infection and it was stopping him from absorbing water from the formula.

Thank you. I am hoping to hear back tonight. I can tell you that it is challenging taking on an unweaned bird. I dedicate at least 6-8 hours a day to him right now.

Good call on going to the vet.

When he gets older you still maybe spending 6-8 hrs with him. I cook more for my bird then my kids HaHa. My B&G doesn't fly so he runs around the floor getting into all kinds of trouble. His new thing is getting onto the kitchen counters. He will open the draws as he's climbing them and of corse stoping at each one to empty them. When he gets to the top he starts flapping his wings and its just enough to get on the counter and then he looks at me all proud.

Birdbrain... you gotta get a video of that!! I am laughing at just the image, I would love to see him actually in the midst of his chaos and the pride in his eyes for a job well done!!

Oh i know how you feel! When i have a baby possum or joey, they have to be fed every 3-4 hours... and sometimes that feeding can take an hour especially the first week because they don't know how to drink from a bottle Then toileting them, teaching them to eat, cleaning their blankets haha

So when i am caring for one, i am up at 3am maybe until 5am Would easily have to spend 6+ hours with them a day!

I am sorry to hear about your poor baby, well done for going to the vets so quickly, he will be very grateful !

Fingers crossed he has a quick recovery!


That is very interesting though, i have learnt something new, their skin on their face can even flake and dry out if they aren't getting enough fluids, kinda like humans!
