I have been shopping for a dyh for a couple of months now and am torn between acquiring a rehome or a baby. I am not having much luck with finding a rehome within an hour's driving distance. Most of the rehomes have also been neglected for one reason or another and many of the CL ads I have inquired are not returning a response to my inquiry. The majority of the ones I am interested in are located in Orlando which is 5-7 hours away.

I think I am going to check out the rehomes until spring, and, if I don't find something that meets my standards, I will look into acquiring a baby. My heart is set on a magna though. If I am going to spend big bucks on a baby, then lets aim high. lol.

Those members who have purchased dyh babies, how did you find a reputable breeder? I have been to various generic bird breeder websites listing aviaries, but it doesn't tell much other than what types of birds they breed, and many don't have testimonials or pictures of their offspring.

Can I have some referrals? Did you have the bird shipped? Anything you can tell me is appreciated.

I know once JerseyWendy sees this. She should be able to give some great advice. I believe Sam is a magna. How exciting for you! Good luck with your search! :)

I have been in contact with Wendy and she has been helping me with my search. She has been looking at CL ads that I send and she give me a thumbs up or down. lol. With her help, I have been learning a lot.

Breeders who advertise should be able to supply references. Of course you probably won't get to hear from the unsatisfied customers. Another means is asking if your vet can contact theirs. You can learn a lot from a breeders vet.( and a breeder without a vet speaks volumes). Of course posting on the forum and checking with members is a great way to get info.

That sounds sneaky. I like it! lol. I would rather hear from customers though. I wish I had done a year's worth of research on my German Shepherd breeder. Six years later I have learned a lot of negative information from previous customers. Live and learn.

Gail Worth of Aves International in SoCal is one of the best breeders in the US and her Magna's are nothing short of spectacular.

(She's been a top breeder for 40 years... and is one of the very, very best.)

Google Aves International.

Very few people survive in this business for 40 years, and they certainly don't if they were producing crappy, unhealthy, unsociable birds.

I, too, am in the same predicament. I am looking for a yellow nape, if I get a baby.

I also want mine to be sort of local. Any travelling here is over mountains... The closest town is almost an hour away. The big cities are across a 2 hour (and very expensive) ferry. I don't like travelling that far...
I would prefer to meet a baby, if I'm paying the big bucks I want to know it has an interest in me. I know that that interest can be only surface, and actually being home with us will show the true colours, but I guess I have that fantasy like girls do when picking "the dress". I hope to feel that connection. That being said I connect with most animals. But I can't imagine bringing home a bird that hates me, and expecting to share the rest of my life with it. That would be HEART BREAKING. I am looking for a life long companion, just like I view my fiancé as....

My kids are getting older, and leaving my nest. And I feel like a part of me is leaving. I want to fill that void, and NOT have more kids...

Have you joined a rescue?

Have you joined any local bird clubs?

I've been searching kijiji and CL, with no luck. Everything is on the mainland....

I have been in contact with a rescue and there is one DYH in quarantine. I have come to learn that the director prefers cockatoos which explains why she has so many. She also told me that she thinks amazons are poor pets. The DYH is not friendly according to her so I asked if she would spend extra time with it because the terms I made with my husband. He said the only way another bird comes into the house was if it was hand tame. We will see how the bird is in December after she comes out of quarantine.

I unofficially joined a bird club in Atlanta and posted what I was looking for.
I am looking in all the right places so it's just a matter of time. I want one very much but fate will be the determining factor. I have answered many online ads and I am looking for something that meets my husband's criteria. Sadly the majority have not.

I have widened my search to include Florida which has more opportunities because the climate is warmer and has many breeders of all types of birds.

I would prefer helping an older bird over a baby because there are so many looking for new homes. Once you have visited an animal rescue of any type, you have to think long and hard about going to a breeder. A breeder for me is the last resort. No offense to those who are doing so.

I don't think most breeders would take offense. We love birds too. I understand about how hard it is to find tame rehomes. I hope your successful.

I think that was "once upon a time", unfortunately. :(

That very well could be. I knew her back in the late 80's and early 90's. (Yeah, I'm that old!)

She may have retired after her cancer treatment. Someone else may be running it now. I don't know.

When I first got into parrots Gail Worth and Aves was one of the premier breeding facilities. I would never questioned getting a bird from there. I checked out her website and she's scaled back a lot from what she used to breed.

She had cancer, and very nearly died. I don't know who's running the operation now, or if she has help.
