Species Advice

Quakers are illegal in so many states including California due to there hardeness to adapt to climate. But when I had m avairy up and going my tiels were outside 24/7. 100 plus summers and 10 degree winters. I used to live in the desert. Had them out there 3 years until they were stolen. The rest were after brought inside due to the risk of theft.

Also Quakers are very aggressive to other birds from my experiences.
I'd only recommend another cockatiel with cockatiel unless like Stated above "unless raised together as babies" then it's ok. But older bird I would advice against it sorry. :(.
Budgies though are great cage mates they often flock natrualy in the wild.
And 400 birds check ebayclassifieds. Criegslist but for babies
Here's so cals going rate.
Sun conure 399
Senegals 399-499
Capes 599-699
Green cheek conure 99-399 mutations varys
Grass keets 99-199
Indian ringnecks 150-500 mutations varys
Cockatiels 45-300. Mutations vary
List can go on.

It is adapt over time, you can't just stick a indoor quaker outside and expect them to be ok with it.

A duh! :) I was just pointing out that birds can adapt, not saying they should.

I don't think there is such a thing as a cold weather parrot. Common sense has to kick in at some point.

I have seen pictures of quakers in NYC at a park, in winter, eating with the local pigeons. So some can adapt.

Quakers are one of the very few specie that can adapt to cold weather yes. I did not want to mention it cause I don't want the poster to assume that parrots can adapt to cold weather. Because of Quakers' ability to adapt to different conditions, that's the reason why they were outlawed. Plus they make giant nests. It is adapt over time, you can't just stick a indoor quaker outside and expect them to be ok with it.

When I saw the video I assumed that they had a rare genetic abnormality or something that allowed them to adapt to the cold. I know that Denver gets colder than New York City, and I also have no intention of putting a bird from a warm climate outside here when it is cold. I wish there was a Russian parrot.

Buy a Kia, but have fun trying to keep it in its cage, or even in your house, or garage, or barn, or whatever. lol They live where its cold. They eat the fat of sheep and can figure out almost anything. Very smart.

Can you get Keas in the states? They are native here in NZ and they live in the mountains in the snow. we have heaps of cold weather parrots - we had no native mammals so birds ended up filling the ecological niche that would be occupied by mammals. Im not sure if you can get them but hey! they are very very naughty....tourists at the glaciers always have problems with the rental cars, flocks of keas dismantle them! ive seen them remove windscreen wipers, door seals, wing mirrors......

I don't think you can, and I don't know who would want to even attempt to own one as a pet. Yikes! Your house would be down to 2x4's in less than a year.

I don't know if they are available, but I am going to look into it. From what I have read if the US government does not consider a species of bird endangered, and it is not native they are generally legal. Followed by the question of are there any captive bred birds avialable.

Hope you realize they aren't really a pet.

From reading about their requirements, I do not believe I could house a happy kea as they require more room than I can provide. Thank you for the suggestion, and if I am ever looking for another bird when I have lots of room I will remember them.

When I wrote that I did not, but I did do some research on them and came to that conclusion.

I looked up the price for them and they are well over 10,000 dollars Each, and it was vary vague weather or not you would need permits or not, theres two to three pair in the states somewhere, and they are only breeders, so good luck handling them if you can afford/find them.

hahah yep they are not really pet material.........definitly not with bob around as Keas are a bit nutty and wil evenl attack, kill and eat a sheep!! they are great if you ever get to nz and encounter them, they are like little thugs! clownish thugs, but criminals nonetheless lol

OH and a group of Keas is called a PANDEMONIUM....says it all really!

Actually most of out companions are endangered or critically endangered.
Some may be least concern. Look up sun conures. There endangered. Alot of zons are endangered and critically endangered. It's nuts to think we have more in captivity then the wild. If anyone's watched rio that's based on a a true story. Yes rio the cartoon. It's about Presley the spix macaw. Spix macaws are extinct in the natrual and wild habitat. Now to have a few sacuarys with breeding seneris running to then later re release them to increase the population of these beautiful birds. So we cross our fingers lol

I know you said they were out of your price range but for the sake of a story and perhaps something to deter you further... if you're still looking at a bird like a crow... I heavily HEAVILY discourage it! My dad kept a crow for a number of years, but that is because he was orphaned and critically injured. My dad found him on the side of the road and brought him home. His name was Billy. He only liked my dad and would attack my mom's feet any chance he got. He destroyed the house whenever he was inside, dad kept him in the garage most of the time with free roam of it. (2 car garage, it was huge). Billy could also read... or at least recognize letters or groups of markings which means he knew which way to turn a knob to open a door. I am not exaggerating when I say this bird was too smart for his own good.

Crows require strict care and training, they're not your average bird. They're smarter than dogs and quite possibly most of the general human population... They are not pets. They are not companions. They are wild creatures and should only be treated as such. The only reason Billy was kept is because he was released and kept coming back home. He took up residence in the garage and never left.
