She thinks my Nanday is loud. I told her to multiply by at least 5 for a cockatoo. She has it in her head that because toos tend to be cuddly that they are the "Golden Retrievers of the bird world". I said no, not exactly. A Golden is an easy natured dog that most people can manage to own. A cockatoo requires doing the research and having the right skill set. Having a budgie 30 years ago is not all it takes. I am positive she would not even fair well with a bird like my Nanday who is bossy, assertive and tries to be dominate.

It is unfortunate that people often to have a "a bird is a bird" mentality. While they may be of the same family (parrots), they're all remarkably different animals. To say that, because you had a budgie, you can handle a cockatoo, is like saying that be because you had a tabby means you are equipped to go out and get yourself a mountain lion.

I realize this is hyperbole to an extent, of course, but still.

No, I totally agree. Owning a German Shepard even is different than owing a Lab. Owning a Quarter Horse is different than owning a Thoroughbred. And owning a budgie is not the same as owning a cockatoo. Yes, there are individual differences in every animal, but we can make some generalizations due to species or breed.

She is intelligent, but she is also stubborn and has a tendency to feel she is an expert in all things. So sometimes it's hard to get through to her. Now if she did the research, I know she would learn the material and be better prepared. But, right now she doesn't think she needs to. I'm the sort that knows learning is lifelong, and one must be open to new information or ideas. I also know that I'm not an expert in all things and do my research before undertaking anything completely new. A few years ago I decided to take up motorcycle riding. I read everything I could find about safety gear, best motorcycles for women and new riders, tips on how to keep myself alive in traffic and to deal with obstacles like RR tracks. She was like, well you know how to drive, what else do you need to know? As it turned out, I needed to know everything. Someone will try to kill me every time I get on it. So that's the difference between us, lol! I want to know everything, and she thinks she already does.
