I was reading in a magazine that its a good idea to put leaves (safe) in a bird cage, as it provides them a spot to "hide". It did not specify what kind, but I'm intrigued. Does anyone else have any little hidey spots for their birds?

I've used fresh branches before from elm and apple trees...which provided a great way to keep them busy! Once the leaves had dried up and/or they lost interest, I'd either use the branches and turn them into perches or toss. I didn't do it to provide something for them to "hide" in so much as something they could destroy.

It's usually frowned upon to give parrots hiding places as the birds equate dark, quiet places with nesting. With hens, it can encourage her to lay eggs and with males, it can encourage them to display mating behavior, and/or become testy & nippy. Leaves dry out rather quickly and you'd be left with just dried leaves.

While I don't really give my birds something to hide in or under, they will sometimes take the day's paper & crawl under it, if I leave it spread out on the table or sofa.
