Hi we bought a 8 week old sun conure about 4 weeks ago and he was all fine but for the last few days he has been constantly nodding his head and fluffing up a lot. Does anyone know if this is ok?
Not worries there... that's normal. Sun Conures have all sorts of lil head bobs/sways etc that Im still trying to decipher. Some mean happy bird... some are territorial.. That's probably happy bird headbob)
The wing flapping and head bobbing look perfectly normal for a young baby parrot. I've seen lots of macaw babies do this too, they do grow out of it with time.
I panicked when I saw Skittles doing this for the first time. It just means he's "content" or relaxed.
Given he's a new bird, an avian vet check should be done anyways regardless just so you know the health. A blood panel would be good too in the very beginning so you can rule out any genetic issues. That's all pretty standard.
But the head bobbing and the wing flapping is totally normal. I freaked when I was first noticing it too.
I just want to mention that sunnies are VERY social birds and will want to spend as much time with you as they can- so be sure that whatever time you do spend interacting is an amount of time that you can do regularly. Keep a consecutive routine and when adjustments need to be made do them gradually. Parrots don't react well to 'sudden' change though sometimes thats out of our hands. Also, you should consider a varied diet of pellets and fresh fruit/veggies and limit seeds to just as a treat. Just my opinion.
baby birdy bob! I assume he was hand-fed? If so he's learnt that when he bobs his head flips his wings out he gets undivided attention! Naturally get him a check-up just to make sure there's nothing hiding under the surface.
