I had a question I just bought my first sun conure yesterday and now he's not acting right. In the pet store he was active and setting on my finger. There was another sun conure in the cage. When I bought him they had to clip his wings. He will still set on my finger and shoulder. He let's me feed him but when I try to get him out of the cage he tries to bite. But when I finally get him out he's fine don't bite at all. When he's out all he wants to do is sit on my shoulder or on the back of the couch. But when I put him back in the cage he just sits there. He don't play make any noises or nothing. I've only seen him eat once, every other time I have to feed him by hand. He won't drink water in his cage. I finally got him to drink some water on the table. Is this just stress or what. I'm really scared. PLEASE HELP

It's normal. He's stressed from moving. Give him some time to settle in.

About how much time you think. Oh ya and how do you add pics. Thanks

I've never had a conure but my parakeet still is settling in and it's been over a month. There are some threads about taming and bonding that might help. For pics I go to go advanced, manage attachments and then add.

Hi and welcome! Settling in differs from individual to individual. This is a brand new environment for him, and as birds are prey he will be very still while checking on everything that might kill him. That TV remote...killer.....that thing against the wall....going to jump at him any second now....this toy in my cage, did you see the teeth on that thing? It takes time to see that nothing is out to eat him.

To be honest, it is only at the odd times I see my birds drinking water, yet they do all the time, unless he completely freezes up when in his cage, if the water stays available and clean, he will go to drink, unless he is ill possibly.

I would be careful of him getting into the habit of getting fed by hand. If he lets you pick him up from within the cage, position him right next to his food immediately after putting in his fresh food, give him one or two pieces by hand, tap on the foodbowl and let him sort himself out. If he took the first piece from your hand his little brain is now already geared in food drive, Lol.

Also, check on what the pet store fed him, he might not see what you are giving him as food yet.

Age might also play a role...is he fully weaned if he is a young bird?

And finally, a vet checkup after bringing home a new birdie is always recommended.

Keep us updated and good luck!

My gc conure is cage aggressive from the moment we brought him home. I use a wooden dowel to get him out which he hops right on. Once he's out he's a total lover and will get right on me and love me up. But stick your hand in that cage and you'll come out bleeding! I thought it was from years as a breeder bird and people taking his babies. Maybe it's just a conure thing-maybe some just protect the nest for all they're worth. It was so funny when I first ordered his boing and it came in, he defended it for all he was worth because he totally loved it. You do NOT touch the BOING! You stick your hand up there and touch the bottom of it while he's on the top and he'll tear into that thing like he wishes it were that offending finger lol :) He cracks me up.

Also it takes some time of settling in for the birds to start eating after they first get to your house. (try quartered green grapes and apples with the seeds removed for conures, also red raspberries are a big hit) I was just freaking out about that with my new greenwing we recently got and she's eating fine now after a few days of picking and eating very little. Suddenly she's got her appetite back with a vengeance.
