We have a family medical issue that just popped up. One of the kids has to have surgery and she will be out of school for 2 weeks to recover. I am going to go stay with the family for the first week and help take care of the little patient so her parents can go to work. They are on a fixed income and can't afford the off time, I work from home so I'll work from their home. Soooo, I told them that Buddy will have to come with me, along with my parade of dogs which they are fine with. My concern though is they have several dogs, all outside dogs but one, and this one is an inside princess, is a pitbull and thinks Buddy is lunch. I've decided to take Buddy's main cage, his mansion because it's heavy duty where his old cage is very flimsy. I figure the heavier cage will offer more protection if the pit, Zoe gets an opportunity to bump the cage.

Two questions for everyone. First, is there any recommendations on how to keep the dog away from Buddy? I'll be there in the house all day and Buddy will be with me so I can and will intervene, even put her in a room for a time out. They do not have a kennel for her but that is another thought I had, taking Canelo's and putting her in the kennel if needed.

Second question, they live in an old farm house in the country. They have roaches, mice and you know I REALLY LOVE this little girl because they have found black snakes in their house. I do not want to bring home any roaches so is there a way to put something in or around Buddy's cage to deter them? I hate roaches, don't have an issue with mice and I hate, hate, HATE snakes!!!! The last snake they killed in the house was last June and it was 2 feet too big!!!!! Meaning it was 2 feet long!!!! The family battle with the roaches and I've gone up and helped bomb the house with roach bombs, unloading the house and reloading, cleaning everything and I told them I was going to bring Ortho Home Defense to spray on the outside of the house, they can spray the inside after we leave. No they are not insulted with this, my sister in law cried because she's so frustrated with the roach battle. Now to keep snakes out of Buddy's cage, I figure I can put mothballs in the bottom under the grate, but is this a risk to Buddy? Will moth balls hurt him?

I will be sleeping with the lights on for sure. The family says they don't have snakes in the house but if there are mice, then there are most likely snakes and they can get themselves into some amazingly tight spaces. We'll see if I can hang in the house!

Update, I've worked it out so Buddy doesn't come with me. I've been having a hard time finding a sitter for Buddy. Apparently I'm the only bird lover in my family but we've decided Husband needs to stay and work so he and Buddy will have bonding time. That is greatly needed for the two. One relative told me that Buddy is so little but when he opens his wings he turns into an eagle. I cracked up at this but that is an interesting viewpoint.

I think it's wonderful that you are going to help them out, and I'm glad that Buddy can stay home with your hubby so you don't have to worry about that. They should be best buds by the time you return:)

Thanks Terry. As far fetched as it sounds it is all true but I'm happy that Buddy will stay with Husband. I was very worried about Buddy and Zoe. I'm glad we found a way to avoid that situation.

I'm glad to hear Buddy will be spending quality time in his own home with his other parront. Sounds like a wonderful thing you're doing to help the little girl and her family, I hope her surgery goes well and she recovers quickly.

I'm glad he will be staying home, and I'm glad you are going to go help out. What a blessing you must be!

I am glad Buddy will stay home too. I will miss him though. We have "coffee" together in the mornings. This means he comes out of his cage, we say good mornings, he watches me make coffee, feed the pups, let them out after eating, make a cup of coffee for me, start cutting veg and putting a fresh bowl of veg in his cage. He stays on my shoulder not ready to eat yet. We visit for about an hour, then he eats and then naps. He's rotten and very spoiled

It's good you got someone to take care of your birds. When I went to Baltimore this year I was so paranoid because I had to have my birds travel to my parent's house. It wasn't far but they were definitely spooked, although when I came back Cream was super happy to see me.

When I came back it was so great to see them again, and Cream was pretty happy to see me. He was a bit unruly for a while but he got back after a while, probably just because he wasn't used to seeing me for a short while.

Now I was away for shorter than you were (I left them with my parents for about a week, you are twice as long) so it might be a little more difficult I guess in this respect.

I'm just glad you got someone to watch them...

I commend you for familial dedication, but snakes, snakes, snakes!Yikes, that's one animal that scares the crap out of me! I hear roaches dipped in chocolate are a tasty snack! ;)
