Talk me out of it!

I always go into the bird room whenever I am buying bird food at our local store to see what they have. Well... this blue crowned Amazon immediately caught my attention. I began talking to her, and she proceeded to chatter nonsensical stuff right back. I was able to give her scritches and everything!

I asked the store owner what her story was. She's 28 years old, and had been left outside the store after hours with a note attached to her cage, saying that her elderly owner had cancer and could no longer care for her.

The store is asking $500 for her.

I already have 6 birds...should I, or shouldn't I???

I met my first Amazon last weekend (a yellow naped, the only type we get over here as far as i know) and he was also very sweet. He let me scratch him too =D But his price tag was $5000 not $500!!

You are asking the wrong person because I say TAKE HER TAKE HER! I can never say no to a story like that
But it seriously comes down to whether you feel like you can give her the attention, etc. that she needs. I always ask myself if I can make that bird's life better before I get it. If the answer is yes, I bring them home. If no, I leave them to find a better home and situation that I could give them.

I'm not the best person to give advice on getting 'another' bird, with as many as I have, but I'm not the only one one here who has plenty of birds.

all I can say is do your pro's and cons, and see what you come up with.

btw, can't wait to see a picture when you bring her home....which I hope you do.

I say GET HER! but only if you can (like Terry57 said) if you can improve his/her life.

My view is to make sure you have the time to give enough attention, showers, feeding, cage cleaning that he requires without stressing or overwhelming you. I think you have 6 birds? You have to decide how much you can handle and finances. I know without my husband, who helps out tremendously in all aspects with the birds, I couldn't possibly care properly for our 6 birds. We also have 2 boys and 3 dogs to care for and I work. It's all up to you, good luck. Btw that's why I hardly go into our bird section of the store, that's how we wound up with my birthday present, Gizzy.

Thanks everyone. I've tried doing research on this type of Zon, but I can't find a whole lot about them on the net. Do any of you have one of these amazing Zons?

My husband isn't nixing this idea, so she might be coming home to live with us soon!

Are you sure she's a "blue-crowned"? If so, then she's a mealy- gentle giants and sweethearts.

There are a few other amazons that have blue on their heads though....

She is big! I couldn't find anything like her under blue crowned.

Search for "mealy amazons"...they are big!! They're the biggest amazons.

Blue fronted, yellow shouldered, and orange winged all have some degrees of blue on their heads from what I've been researching...

She's probably a blue crowned Mealy then. Her vocalizations are louder than my Pan Am's.
